Here is the hood prop I rigged up yesterday. Until I get the shocks ordered and find time to install them this will have to do. It will work when I install all the new Tyco relays later this week.
I used a piece of scrap 3/4" schedule 40 PVC pipe, cut at 3',4" +-. (this will work in a pinch all by it self, but I high graded). Bought a pack of rubber chair tips/feet at Lowes, $2.50. Drill a hole in one of the rubber feet. Install a regular foot on one end of the pipe and the one with the hole on the other end. Open hood and put the end with the hole up top where the hood pin slides into the hole and prop the other end in upper most crook of the hood. Works great and I have about $4 in it!

Lol, it probably took you longer to rig this up than it'll take to switch the hood shocks out. Really, it's that easy. The only time I was worried was when I was switching out the driver's side one. Quick tip: bring up the headlights and it'll be easier to reach the back. Just make sure you have multiple failsafes holding the hood up while you're in there. You need to push your hand way up there to reach the rear cotter pin on the driver's side and if the hood falls then bye bye hand. The passenger side is a cinch if you take off the battery access top hatch.

Wow, I'm giving advice instead of taking it for once! First time for everything. :)

Thanks Joe. I need to install the new relays, so I can bring up the headlights. Actually I have about 5 minutes in the prop, I had to go to Lowes anyway-LOL. My problem is sometimes finding the five minutes. I have too many projects and not enough time-sigh. I'll try and order the real hood struts later this week.

Cool, and if I recall correctly, there's an emergency manual headlight raise wheel thing above the battery compartment to use when your lights won't come up, if that helps.

I have used one of these things for years on my 328 rear lid. The tongue fits right into the latch on the lid. The service tech even likes it.

Can you find it for us Joe please?

I took off my front bonnet to re-spray it; went perfect ...

But also notice the enourmeous power of the two struts .. is it easy to replace them ?

Anyone here to describe it for us ?

On the aft (rear-facing) end of the headlamp lifting motors there is a black knob--you can turn the knob to manually raise the lights. Pull back the carpet on the sides next to the lifting motors and remove a large black rubber plug--reach through the hole for the knob.

The struts on a 512TR shouldn't be much different to change than on a TR, and there are multiple threads showing how to do that.

A TR does not require any removal of marker lights. Just have to remove the cover over the AC condenser on the left side and the battery cover on the right side. Move the headlights manually as needed.

There is a block off plate on the drivers side that is an exact bookend to the battery cover on passenger side, four bolts and it comes off, then it's the same procedure as the passenger "battery" side

Why not just let the motors raise the lights and then turn the battery off?

You need to turn the battery off anyway to lift them manually.

That's the method I used. The cotter pin is frightfully close to the headlight body in lowered position, so a vascular surgeon with needle nose pliers might can do it, but me... raise the headlights.

You still need the needle nose pliers or a really long pair of hemostats/locking pliers and a good light.

This one comes with a slot to store tool. Very handy but must be topped up with Diet Coke to remain functional.

Watch out for the maintenance costs on that model. And people said TRs were expensive! :)

Agree that's the way to do it but I was responding to a few posts earlier in the thread: I need to install the new relays, so I can bring up the headlights.

and this: there's an emergency manual headlight raise wheel thing above the battery compartment to use when your lights won't come up

and this: Can you find it for us Joe please?
