That's what I like to think... researching the threads and service bulletins I think it is a bit more complex, but I sure do have ABS and my gearbox serial number matches the latest updated version too!

Lol indeed. After 20 years not sure these make a difference, cars need to be well maintained and parts can be upgraded as you go along with maintenance / replacement of failed parts. But good for advertising the car if you want to sell... Or convince ourselves we have a 94 MY best model 512TR!

That's exactly why it is confusing, my VIN is lower than yours, but my gearbox is higher! I have 1774 (same part number though)

lol why is that confusing....wld you expect there to have been a good inventory management system? the 90s in Italy - im surprised we haven't found any V8s in our 512trs!

This is the answer, it goes by component ID number, not the VIN....

As far as I understand, there are VINs = serial numbers (S/N) and assembly numbers (A/N). When a car is ordered it gets a VIN and when it is produced it gets an A/N. This is not necessarily the same order between S/N and A/N. In Maranello they produce a lot of TR and after that a lot of some 8 cylinder Ferrari. This is why there is always a difference in sequence of VINs and A/N. To be able to say which gearbox is in your car, you need to compare the A/N and not the S/N (VIN).

I just checked my 512 TR manual and did not find where the A/N is. May be they introduced the A/N after the TR. My 575M has an A/N but the 512TR seems to miss the A/N. Sorry for the confusion, if the TR did not have an A/N already.

PS: Even if the TR should have no A/N, my explanation is still the reason, why you can’t use the VIN to tell if a car has the newer gearbox or not: The VIN is allocated when the order of a new car comes in at Maranello and not when the car is produced (as far as I understand).

All 512 TRs have an assembly number, which can be found on a small plate at the right side of the engine compartment.
See the attached photo (green arrow), which is of my own car when the engine was out.

Regarding the Testarossa: all cars produced after June 1st 1989 (around s/n 83xxx), will also have an assembly number, which can be found at the same location.

When looking at service bulletins of Ferrari, the "production changes" are sometimes identified by VIN (serialnumber) and sometimes by Assembly Number.

you are one of those who take the engine out to the top like me. so later you don´t have to manage the complete wheel alignment as all the others who take the complete part out to the bottom. but nearly none is doing this aligment then :( :(

Sorry, but I never take the engine out ... I have "two left hands", so I shouldn't be working on the car myself. Too dangerous ;)

Anyway, as far as I know, the shops who worked on my car always got it out on the top.
