What are you guys using to clean the Krinkle finish on your Plenums and airboxes
    ( TR 92 airboxes)

For years I have tried to figure out how to clean that krinkle finish on my Boxers and now my TR's plenum chambers...I think I got it..
I pride myself in detailing out of the box ideas....But this one is only for the brave..

I am using a paint stripper in the method you would use a polishing compound..that is to only remove the top layer of oxidized or stained paint..

This weekend I did my airboxes , very nicely...
Next week I will do the Plenums..

Step 1 , shut off your cell phone, you need concentration here.
step 2, paint on stripper in sections, and count to 15..then remove, wipe off with microfibre cloths ....then clean with soapy water cloth...it is the equiv of chemical dermabrasion..
It does not destroy the krinkle but yet it does remove a layer of paint...

DO THIS ONLY while undistracted as 1 miute will remove entire paint surafce..
Heres some pics of what the air boxes look like now..
sorry no b4 pics..they were just stained irregular yellowed with spots that did not wash off..
My plenums have stains from foam cover...I started them but did not finish..

    I know , extremely unorthodox....just like me!

Do you live near the Autobahn???

BTW, Painted the Muffler with stripper and steel surrounding pipes as well..
Leaves this type of metal with very clean uniform new surface finish...
Don't , I repeat don't drip any product on anything you cherish.

I just sprayed some WD-40 on mine and they seemed to clean up a bit. They look better than they used to, anyway.

to go on the AUTOBAHN it is only about 1 km away :) but this part of autobahn is only unlimited speed for about 15 km, then limit 120 km/h for about 30 km and then again no limit for long time, except the construction sites where it is sometimes only 60 km/h :( :(

    Wow, beautiful.

You've got 11mm spacers on the rear, right? The wheel to body relationship looks perfect.

I think I'll tentatively try some paint stripper for just a few seconds on my airboxes and plenum. Your cleaned finish looks sensational.
    Thanks for the tip.

Boxes look great, thats a valuable tip. If you get a chance I'd like to see what the exhaust looks like after stripping, my OEM exhaust has turned pretty "brown" over the years.

    Thank you for kind words
I lead a high maintainance high stress lifestyle in NYC
I find it physically and mentally most rewarding to be as in touch with cars especially ferraris,
As my only antidote, truly my escape.
I pray that someday soon i can have 5 or more F cars at once that are in need of my touch.
    Just like Newman!

Wow that is a ballsy way to clean off engine components. You kind of went for the nuclear option right off the bat. Usually I start with the least caustic options and work my way up the ladder.

I cant argue with the results. Im assuming this would be a 'once every few years' type of thing. I can see it eating through the finish after many applications.

    Dermabrasion......good analogy.

Yes , its a once in a decade step
    I did try others cleaners,
Many... But nothing would go into the krinkles and get the stain out.

    Enter.... The nuclear solution!

Wow so you have 44mm rear spacers? Curious what brand are they? You use the longer bolts or the bolt to hub type? I was thinking maybe 11 or 20mm? On second thought with a spacer of 44mm you would have to bolt to the hub as there are no wheels bolts that extra long.

Are you not over stressing the hub bearings and studs?
