Hello from an absolute neophyte newbie. Just bought a 87 TR, red on black, 21500 miles, deposit down, paying balance and collecting this week. I'm in London, it's a UK RHD car, will be dry stored in winter and taken for the occasional blast in what we Brits call spring and summer. I work in magazines (not car magazines) and am lucky enough to get to drive new supercars on a regular basis (there's an FF in my driveway right now; an F12 a couple of weeks back) but ZERO experience with old Ferraris so will be desperate for help. I bought it because I have always loved the cars, have a bit of cash and - hope it may also be an appreciating asset. I'm planning to feature it in one of our magazines as well...
I will post pix as soon as I pick the car up. Looks beautiful. But I hope it doesn't ruin me..

Congrats Darius. I'm intrigued. If it's not a car mag but cars are featured, what is it? Can;t wait to read your article.

Thank you thank you and as you might have worked out through my miserable efforts I am new to both forum posting and owning Ferraris... Have filled in my details. The magazines I run are global luxury magazines and also I write for a well known men's magazine title. Working out where to run the stories. Testarossas are the dream cars of my peers, whether motoring souls or not. So although this is a private purchase, have to write about it. I am ignorant of engines and drivetrains though. I will post pix etc as soon as I get delivery in the next week. It is a car of eternal soul and beauty, like a Titian of automobiles. that sounds so pretentious!

Congrats, Darius! It's an awesome feeling to go from the bedroom poster to the real one. You will probably, like most of us children of the 80's, stare at it in your garage for hours with a slight disbelief that it's actually there. :)

Congrats. And what a way to introduce yourself to F Chat.

It's kinda fun having trepidation and nervousness. It's a special time.

After reading I had to go sit in my car. What a cool car. I love it.
Darius I'm sure you will love sitting in it and smell the leather. Grab the shifter, look at the nice little horse on the steering Wheel. Play with swithches etc. A fun new toy.

welcome to the flat 12 owners and drivers.

you start here with: .....but ZERO experience with old Ferraris

a TR or one of the complete TR family is not old, but you may see a big difefrnece between this car now and the new ones.

if you like an old F first of all it is nearly not payable anymore and second it is like a heavy old truck to drive. the TR is easy to handle, so enjoy it

    Congrats Darius!

Spend the week reading up on posts here and download the Work Shop Manual (free).

Search 'white connectors' here and take a peek at your fuse box for them. Make sure yours are not getting brown (heat) etc. If they are there is a procedure to fix the fuse box before it melts.

Little notes: To turn on the lights in the engine compartment, you must turn on the light stalk on the steering column to position I or II (cant remember). There is a battery cut off in the front trunk. The thigh bolster does in fact go forward and aft. If its stuck, some TR's came with a retaining pin on the tracks, remove it. The front spoiler is fiberglass.....you will scrape it. But the good news is....ITS FIBERGLASS! comes off easily and can be repaired just as easy. Repaint with Semi Gloss spray paint.

The Trunk, Bonnet and glove box all have back up cables to open them if one of the primary cables snap. The window switches can be popped out and cleaned. After years, the internal grease gets gummy and breaks contact. Slow windows are generally due to the grease turning to glue on the cable spool in the door.

The differential is also a weak point. A prudent buyer would have it inspected at the very least.

Check out the cross reference thread for affordable alternatives to Ferrari parts.

Post some pics when you get her home!

Thank you. I am having her taken direct to a specialist for a complete check over because my mechanical skills are equal to Kim Kardashians acting skills actually they are worse. Congrats on he purchase! Lots of us new here in the last year. We are the Freshman class of '14-LOL!
You will love the car, it really is special. Be prepared for crowds wherever you go. Iconic is an understatement. As Christian said, read, read, read here on the forum. Your mechanical abilities may be limited, but many of these threads may give you the confidence to tackle some of the simpler chores. Not everyone is expected to change their own clutch (an inside joke). Even though you may not be able to fix it, you can learn to recognize/diagnose some of the issue that will pop up (and you will know if your mechanic is pulling your leg or not :)). Plus if you are new to forums, they can be quite entertaining, and people say the silliest things on the internet.
Don't hesitate to ask questions here, this is a great knowledge base, and often help is only a keyboard away.
Just don't ask how much your car will be worth in 6 months, that subject has been flogged like a dead horse here lately:)

Thank you everyone for fantastic replies and support. Big apologies for not coming back sooner, like many of us I guess have been travelling non-stop (not in a Ferrari..). Am going to cheat by linking to my article in GQ magazine about the TR (I work for Conde Nast, GQ's parent company) and will reply and post properly asap!

My advice would be as with any low profile car, don't allow other cars to be directly alongside you, especially trucks & be aware of the sticky cold second gear. Enjoy!
