I unscrewed the top off a 512TR air horn compressor for cleaning and maintenance and a small spring leapt out onto the bench.
I can't see where it went and there are no obvious marks of where it sat.
Best I can come up with is that it held the small felt pad in place.
    Does someone know?

I think this spring comes to the center of the plastic. but also then a smal ball or may be 2 on both sides??

have a look at the inside cover if there is an impression from a ball or the spring

what is this small part on the picture at 2 clock?

Screw from the lid on the bench.
That was my first thought but even the fully compressed spring won't fit inside the plastic spindle in the middle so I started looking around the air passages on the sides.
I'll look for a ball bearing, something else might have been in there.

1st Gen TR is different pump so I can't really help but I can say there is no spring in mine (88.5). The four phenolic vanes are somehow spring loaded but I didn't disassemble any farther than this (I just added some machine oil to lube the vanes). They certainly wouldn't have that large a spring anyways. It appears the rotor is just pressed on the shaft--can't see a need for a large spring (or ball) on my setup.

I think you're on the right track with holding the felt pad in place (1st gen. has the heart shaped metallic screen/filter you see in my pictures (friction fit) vs. your pad. Any circular indentation on the pad from spring pressure? Sorry I couldn't help but good luck with your car.

The spring should sit in the center hole to assist in when the cover is removed.

OP says this is not the case.
