Hi, I was just looking and there`s 3 Flying mirror UK Testarossa`s for sale at the minute - all look real nice - but they all have a similar central ariel in the middle of the front of the roof.

Ferrari Testarossa, single mirror (1986) - Foskers Ferrari | The UK's oldest independent Ferrari specialist

    Current Inventory - Tom Hartley

Ferrari Testarossa for sale - Penn, Buckinghamshire, Slade’s Garage

I always assumed when I had seen one in the past that it was an add on for a car phone or CB or something - but now there`s 3 low mileage ones that all have it on I was wondering if it`s a UK thing - although my UK car doesn`t have one?

Are there other early UK car owners on here with / without the ariel?

Is it common in the US ?

    Cheers,
    Dom.

My car is a 1987 Euro model. A majority of parts fitted to the car were manufactured in 1986.

Is single mirror, right hand drive the magic button in the UK?

Back to the question at hand, I was under the impression any external antenna was an aftermarket add on.

Yeah same as in other markets the flying mirror has quite a following but with 700ish? Rhd Testarossa's, 438 of them UK, there can't have been many flying mirror ones (100ish?), so it's the relative rarity.

The UK classic car market in general though has really taken off.

Anyway yes I always thought the ariels were after market but with all 3 of those having them I wondered if it was some UK dealer thing.

    Cheers,
    Dom.

    Well ! What's the answer fellows ?

Aftermarket ... yes or no ?

Or only a UK thing ?

The answer is absolutely aftermarket, not limited to UK.

It`s strange why so many UK cars seem to have them - and what their purpose is.

I can`t see why it would be an antenna for the radio when there`s one in the windscreen.

I`ve looked at a few old road test mags - and some have them, like this:
Fast Lane Sep 1985 Ferrari Testarossa, BMW M635CSi | eBay

    but some don`t, like this:
Motor Sport 07/1986 featuring Ferrari Testarossa road test, Maserati, Alfa Romeo | eBay

    One of those mysteries lol!

Anyway - an `85 RHD that`s an early one!

Mine`s February `86 when it was registered.

    I have a theory:
    It was the roaring 80's.
All those wolfs in the City needed a TR...and a cell phone.
Hence the ariels on all those british TR.
    Tell me I'm wrong! :D

    That`s a good bet!

Though u would think it would be just as common in the US - after all the UK is so small we don`t really need phones - we can just shout to each other!

    Hi Dom

Mine is registered August 1st 1985 so is a fairly early one Rosso corsa cream leather black dash red carpets 22k miles vin 58049 UK car

Don't think there can be many single mirror right hand drive maybe less than 50. As they were only built for 18 months and production was much lower in early years. What spec is yours
    Regards
    Andy

    Hi Andy,
Nice spec. and miles - must be mint!

Mine is flying mirror #61571, UK RHD, Red / Crema, black dash - but I think brown originally. Red carpets replaced in the 90`s so not sure if they were Red originally.

    Just under 64,000 miles now.

Diff was replaced at 50,000 miles.

Might be a good idea to put the basic details of our cars on this thread:
    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/boxers-tr-m/166763-production-numbers-1985-1986-single-mirror-testarossa-18.html

As for the numbers - it`s just a bit of educated guessing - but 700ish RHD Testarossa`s total, a little over half (438) of them UK RHD.

Somewhere between 1000 and 1500 flying mirror world wide (1250 might be a good guess if produced until half way through `86) - so maybe 120ish flying mirror RHD total - and maybe 60-70 of them UK?

Pity there`s no official records....I think 438 being the only official figure - but that`s all years of UK RHD Testarossa`s.

Having spoken this last weekend to a UK Ferrari Concours de Elegance judge, Ferrari did fit a roof ariel to some cars. I removed mine and lost marks.
    BUT...

    We won!!

    Photos to follow :)

    Nice result Phil!

As for the ariel do you know what it was connected to?

This could be one of those mysteries with ever conflicting evidence lol - not that it`s particularly important ofc, I was just curious after seeing those cars.

Andy, sorry I can`t remember where I saw 700+ all markets of RHD now....

Cool, cheers for the info everyone.

I'm gona check mine and see what it picks up stations like as it's just got the windscreen ariels, though I guess the stations probably broadcast stronger nowadays anyway.

Never actually tried the radio since I had it!

Well the windscreen ariel is no good!

I turned on the radio and the reception was surprisingly clear....

but then seconds later it started playing Justin Timberlake....

Do you guys with roof ariels get better tunes??
