1983 512 BBi #44809 just got listed for sale at Sheehan's for $339,500. The asking price is low, is it because the engine was rebuilt? How much do you think this affect the price overall? How much do you think Sheehan would list this car if it has not been twin-turbocharged and then later rebuilt after the turbos removed? 1983 Ferrari 512 BBi Serial Number 44809 - main page
Why is 340K low? The car did 12K miles in a few years, then it did 3k in 20 years. Looks very nice in photos. Has wrong steering wheel, and interior looks okay. And it has those stick on rubber bumpers. Sheehan is not know for giving things away.
Rememebr when Sheehan said boxers were sale proof. I think its a market correct price, unless you think auctions are a bottom price. Does the rebuild from turbos detract from price, probably, especialy compared to a mint "origional". On the other hand the rebuild if done properly makes for a much better drivingn car, and a more useable one. The 16k miles means you can put miles on it, withou worrying about breaking 5k or 10k miles too. So a really nice cosmeticaly great boxer in good drivign condition is a 300kish car, sounds right.
the car looks ok. i am not a fan of the bumpers, but they are not as horrendous as some i have seen. i would think the engine rebuild is a plus. every bbi at this stage would benefit from an engine out tear down and rebuild. the previous turbo installation is kind of irrelevant after that. what is wrong with the steering wheel?
I believe it should be the larger and solid black spoke with flat face on the wheel - like a TR wheel. I prefer the wheel on this car, but I'm pretty sure it is wrong. Drove a few 83s and none had this wheel. I have an aftermarket on mine, which makes the car easier to drive and I have an original one in a box for the next person.
Good day All, Just adding documentation... Is it just me or is the warranty card for another car (... the chassis number on the warranty card looks to me to be 44391)? Perhaps the original card was lost and the previous owner found a similar one to have in the owner's pouch? Great catch on the warranty card. I wonder if the sections of the vehicle description about the car's origin were based on the warranty card. The car still has the dimpled foam material on the underside of the rear clamshell. As far as I know, that foam is still unobtainium. This car is one of those sort of Euro sort of federal in-between cars. Wouldn't kick it out of bed though. Beautiful.
This has the correct wheel for an 82 and 83. No doubt someone has a late 83 with an 84 Testarossa wheel but it's an 84 thing along with a bunch of other detail differences that are 84 specific. This car has the 82-83 details.
Interesting about the wheel, I guess I've never seen an '84 before. I thought the wheel was wrong as well. Reasonable price in todays market.
Okay, I defer to the expert. Weird that the other 83s I looked at and drove both had the 84 wheel. Anyway, I like the 83 wheel better than the 84.
According to Beehl's BB book, first '84 serial number is 48253. Also, the first '83 listed is 44321. I have a feeling Sheehan went by the warranty card and really doesn't know the ownership history of this car, lol! Shocked!
Lol. Yes shocking indeed. Mike needs to spend more time updating his database on these "sale proof" old boxers
46435 (first registered in November 1983) has what seems to be a Testarossa steering wheel. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Seems like there are a significant number of Boxers in Europe that have this wheel. I assume that they are being changed out by the owner, aren't coming that way from the factory.
That car would be considered an 84. Note the horsie on the console with the stitchless leather rectangle. Thats an 84 detail as are the seat backs, bet the inner fenders have a stucco finish rather than "oooops we put too much paint on there" 82 - 83 style.
Good day All, Chassis 44809 is now on auction on BaT: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1983-ferrari-512-bbi-5/ Cheers, Sam
Good day All, Bat Auction was a no sale with the chassis 44809 bid to $229K USD. A week or so before a very similar car sold for $335K ... a very odd market. Cheers, Sam
Wonder if the turbo installation and removal, lack of CATs, refabricated unoriginal parts, and inability to pass smog test in California and maybe other states held this one back?
