    What do you mean by properly service? A service simply means replacing the gear lube and maybe inspecting the internals. You can view the entire gearbox internals without taking the engine out. You can remove and replace the differential without taking the engine out. You can remove all the of the shift linkage without taking the engine out.

    You cannot remove the layshaft or the mainshaft but you can inspect every tooth on every gear. Unless there's a problem, why would you need to do more than that? There's nothing else left.
