So I just got some bad news about the boxer. It looks like the headers have rusted completely through and for me, that's a problem for smog. What do you guys do for this? Is there someone that can get some of these readily available? Any help you guys can give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Need to see a pic of the headers you currently have to see which of the two styles is on your car.

Tubi working with Ferrari Classiche has made replicas of the entire system made from stainless. They had the prototypes at the FCA Annual Meet in Daytona and a few of the IAC/PFA board gave them a critique of them. They were very good but the tips were a little off. I think they are going to address that in production units. I am not sure if the components are going to be made available al la carte or as a complete set. They even tried to duplicate the crappy, splattery welds. They are very good but not perfect but I suspect when the time comes since they have Classiches approval they will have ours too.

Do they put the original part number tags on them? Quicksilver does not.

I am almost certain they did. Ferrari commissioned them to make replicas.

Can you post a pix of the rust-through? They are not impossible to repair. Mine needed a small patch, and are fine now. Afterward, I had them silver Jet-Hot coated, and I'm very happy with how they look. On a side note, I did some digging into Ti BB headers. Talk about a kings ransom! Just the material is $$$.

What do you have to do for smog? Do the headers affect smog? I noticed California.

mine are out being ceramic coated- There have been a number of pinhole areas that have been identified once they started blasting them both inside and out. They examine them with internal illumination. The areas are then welded. They have had to do this a few times and should be ready for the ceramic coating soon.-I'll post some images as this is done.
I did remove the heat shields that are tack welded on and I am planning on replacing this with a crafted shield attached to the differential housing.

You might get with Tubi and ask where they are on the stainless ones they are making/going to make. Ceramic coating will certainly help but it kind of sounds like they are circling the drain.

Just to know, before tossing them - Get them cleaned up. They're actually relatively easy to pull. Nothing like a 308 which is pretty involved. The 512 is just the simple cross-brace, then one nut after another. Be certain to wear safety specs to keep rust bits & crud out of your eyes.

BTW: I didn't think mine were that bad when I sent them to Jet Hot, but they found a trouble spot, and welded it up for me. 10 Years and maybe 1,000 miles ago - still pretty.

Now I feel really bad! I've been a slave to this machine for 10 years. Suspension front & rear, along with fresh plating, steering rack restoration, brake hydraulic restoration with fresh plating, EO service, emission testing, new diff carrier, just the fresh leather on seats took 9 months etc, etc. I still want to restore window motors & mechanisms. Yup 10 years of absolute joy, punctuated with a few short drives in between. Might be more than 1000, in 10 years, but there were probably a couple of years that were like 15.

    How we love them so!

    :)

Still not showing where they connect to the mufflers and the part number tags aren't legible. Im guessing std 512 headers but cant know without seeing the flanges where they bolt to the mufflers.

you can repair all and sometimes it is easier to repair "junk" ( so old rusty one cut out and weld new one in ) than to make all new

it is only a question of how much someone is willing to invest

It is one thing if you are trying to keep an old Toyota on the road but it is completely different when we are talking about an old Ferrari that has achieved investment class status.
In this case money spent is money invested.

Patching old **** up is not a step in the correct direction for either keeping the car road worthy or impressing anyone with your stewardship of the car.

Do Tl headers aid or detract from the cars value?

Clicking on their website, I just kept getting a pic of the rest of the exhaust, not the headers, with the same generic description, so didn't know if I was actually on a correct page or not.
I've only found references to Tubi's set, but no actual link or info. Have anything that would help?

They just showed us the prototype set a month or 2 ago. I would not expect seeing any of that yet. If information is wanted call and talk to a human being.
