During an engine out service, the shifter rod into the gearbox was moved. It now no longer selects gears. Please advise if you know how to resolve this problem. Thank you.

It is best to put it in second gear and leave it there but it is very easy to reengage by feel.

Is it simply hanging loose and not engaging anything? I have had that happen before. There is a trick to realigning it inside the box (IIRC full clockwise if standing in front of the engine, then push it in, then turn the shaft until the hole is vertical to find neutral). Or you may have to remove the driver's side front engine mount and then open the cover for the side of the transmission to reset it (the repositioning needed is pretty obvious). Not a huge amount of work, it can even be done with the engine in the car.

A good time to change the o ring on the shaft which usually leaks.

if the engine is still out then remove the left gearbox cover and you see how all is workingand put in 2nd gear

if engine is in then you may "play" a little with the shifter and try to get in 2nd gear

    good luck :)

The side cover on the gearbox refuses to come off. Any trick other that terrifying violence?

is the engine still in the car or out?

normaly when all the nuts are away the cover hold only by the sealant. use a small pastic hammer, but may be the 3 springs will fall out and also may be one of the 3 balls.

There is a nut located under the engine mount. Have you removed the mount?

Once you have that side cover off, the shift linkage is very easy to see, understand, and adjust.

Or you can just do it by feel and not take anything apart.

You can do it by feel. Then jack up rear wheels, Put mirror by drivers rear wheel. start car and try gears. If you get reverse when shifting to second, loosen center shift rod and rotate slightly clockwise and try again. Move small increments, you will get it keep trying. I did it without removing side cover.

As Rifledriver as said you should be able to get it into 2nd gear by feel. However, I did have one car where the finger slipped into a place where it was impossible to get it back into the the slider area to catch 2nd gear, and thus required removal of the side cover to get it back in place.
