Ran across a Jag XJR-15 recently. Anyone have any experience owning or driving one? Can they really be driven on the road?

There was a well known poster here who owned one, but i have not seen him post in a looong time, but yes they can be made road legal, depending on where you live of course. Do you have any pictures to share?

I'd pass. I heard they were very poor handling and finding parts will be a nightmare

I looked into the handling issue. Mostly due to the right height. It was set up too high off the ground to generate enough downforce, therefore the car moved around a lot more than it should have. Lowering the car and putting a front spoiler is supposted to help considerably.

Rather than ride height, wasn't it the fact that the cars engine (from a metro!!) was set too high, affecting the centre of gravity?........

Personally i think if your interested you should take the plunge, i spoke to the owner of the car pictured, and as you can see its a U.K. road registered car. I asked him about handling etc, and he said the car was fine, and not difficult or tricky to use. Oh and sorry Greg its not a Metro engine that was the XJ220! The XJR15 is a bona fide V12 , hence many XJ220 owners annoyance with the XJR15 project.
It would certainly make a unique and rare addition to any collection! Let us know what you decide.

You are thinking of the XJ220. The XJR 15's engine is the V12 from the XJR 9 Group racecars.

The one I have seen is a race version. It has a 6 speed non synco straight cut gearbox. It would need a bit of work before it could be road registered. I have not run across any road versions for sale.

My bad. I do remember Jeremy Clarkson driving one (XJR15) and moaning about the engine being too high in the car therefore affecting the handling / CofG, and I do remember a story about a Metro engine being in the back of a Superjag - obviously got them blended together!

Given the number of things Clarkson complains about, easy to do.

Clarkson also dissed the F50 and praised the 348 before crapping all over it later on.

    Center driving position? Sweet!

Thought you needed a McLaren for that...

I think it is actually RHD, just massively offset to the center.

It is RHD and massively offset. Gearshift is to the right of the driver.

How about the seating itself ? I remember trying to enter an XJR-15 a couple years ago ... but anyways, I think it offers great value over money.

If the gearstick is to the right of the driver, then it is surely LHD as per the Mclaren F1

It is not easy at all to get into. Did not think I would fit (6'2") but not bad once you get your legs under the wheel. There is very little drop in height from the bottom of the seat to the pedals.

no detailed pics on the raceandrallied site, but the two cars on the classicdriver site are both claimed to be LHD - yet when you look at the photos (such as this one - http://www.classicdriver.com/upload/cars/11988/1780671/bigd.jpg) they are both definitely RHD. I think details on ads like those are "thoughts" rather than "facts" :)

Miss guided thoughts. Having sat behind the steering wheel of one recently, I can confirm it is RHD.

Weren't all the XJR 15s race versions? i just thought that some were converted for road use, after the race series they were originally built for. As such id always assumed they could all be converted, but i may be wrong.
