I could not resist this truck. 100 miles on it since a complete restoration. Does anyone know if there is a blog or forum for these cars I should join up with? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Huh, and I *just* (Friday) bought a 1971 Series IIA 88. I've always wanted an older LR, wife arranged it for me, now I'm thinking I may have bitten off more than I wanted to chew. I know next to nothing about it, will post pictures once I take delivery (tomorrow or so). So far I've driven it round the block - runs ok, but in having a hard time finding the gears, and the ride is fairly bad (someone installed cool springs, but the shocks may be dead). Chassis seems to have been replaced with a galvanized one, and no (obvious) rust, but is going to be a project. Anyone in the Northern Virginia area with any LR knowledge who feels like getting roped into a project?
Sounds like a great truck. I know of a good guy in NC... Tom Farrell... Here are a few more pictures of the one I just got... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks fellas.. The shop that did the resto decided to not paint it and just leave it the original aluminum.. So once every few months I have to get the Scotch Bright pad out.. It has this overdrive called "Rover Drive" that works very nicely but has a pretty loud whining should at high speeds..
I've been driving it an hour each way to work, not too bad... Cant get over 50 mph on these LA freeways though. So much traffic lately...
... Yesterday I drove mine ~40 miles to my other house It was my first "real" drive in it, and I was a bit concerned because there is a "mountain" to drive over - wasn't sure on power, sometimes finding the gears is a bit tricky (lots of play in the shifter), etc. Anyway, got my wife to follow along behind.. Well, my speedometer doesn't work (yet), so I had no idea what speed I was doing, decided to just go somewhat slower than folk in the left lane. When we arrived, wife told me I was doing ~60 much of the way. I've now decided that when the drivers door shakes like it will break the glass I'm doing ~50. When it shakes like it will come off, it's 60... What could possibly go wrong?
Thats great!! 60 mph, wow... Now which series truck do you have? Do you have OD also? My speedo is no calibrated but works. My truck had smaller tires on it originally so the speedo shows slower than Im actually going. I did find a cool app on my Smart Phone for a speedo that really works. Try and look it up on your phone if you can...
For many years we had a 109 Dormobile camper in NV. The only time it ever hit 60 mph was on a seriously downhill 5 mile long stretch of Hwy. 80 ..even then, the truck was 'self-limited' to 60; no way I could make it go any faster. Let off the pedal and it slowed right down to about 45; its "comfort zone". Image Unavailable, Please Login
Check out the 'hot rod / street rod' AC installations. Very compact & easy to install. We did it to a 1950 Chev pickup. As I recall the unit & install was <$1K. Of course, we had 400hp to play with, not 80hp ..;-) but if you're OK with a 'cool' 45 mph .
I could deal with 45mph today for sure.. 90 degrees today here in Lala land... Wish I had it.. I will look into it for sure.. Maybe I should look into changing out the engine? But there goes the cars value?
Great looking Series you got there! If you have any questions at all or need resources for parts or mechanics PM me as I know a lot about these vehicles. I own a bunch of Series III models, some Series II models, and then have two Series I vehicles from the early 50s as well. Would love to help out however. Attached are a few pics of my rovers.
