$20K for a numbers matching S1, original hardtop - even in pieces - is fair.

However, realize that if the complete restoration means significant rust repair (they are monocoques), then I might pass. Lots of labor to weld in floors, etc.

A few recent rotisserie restos here - budget over $100K unless there is some work you can do (e.g., engine, rear diff / suspension assy, etc). Also, if you want a driver, maybe south of that, but bring the check book nonetheless.

Floors aren't bad in and of itself, but as a monocoque, if enough of the floors are gone, you wonder if the rest of the car is true.

If you can find the right person to work on the car, anything can be done. Just know that it's costly, depending on how much it needs. Here are some pictures of work my Jag mechanic has done (this is NOT my car):

Lippincott's Garage - Our Shop Projects - JaredS

Look at the damage and then the end product - fixed completely. Terry Lippincott is one of the most honest, straightforward people I've ever dealt with. His work is impeccable, I trust him completely. If you can get someone like this to look at - and fix - the car, you will be in great shape.

If you are looking at it from an investment perspective - forget it. If it's simply because you love the car and money isn't a factor, go for it.

I might be a pessimist, but if $20K were a good price some resto shop would have already purchased it and be working on it.

Hmm . . . . I don't know about that. Some sellers don't use the best venue when selling. I recently picked up a '66 E-type FHC. Body is perfect (zero rust/rot). Engine runs strong. Not numbers matching though and interior is a mess (though new interior included with car). Seller started restoration 23 yrs ago and it had been languishing in a dry garage under a cover since then. Bought it through a local ad on CL for a very reasonable price.

I also picked up an Alfa Montreal a bit over a year ago through word of mouth. Car was at an Italian car specialist getting a tune up. They could easily have bought it from the owner, who was looking to sell. I could sell the car today for 2x what I paid, probably more, and I've done nothing to the car since I bought it.

Classic sports cars are not an efficient market.

I try to look at ads and graph out what's fair based on cars in similar condition. $20k for a car in rough shape seems about right. If you look real hard, you'll find a gem.

Purchased my '66 FHC about 10 years ago under $20k

That's a $200,000 restoration...not a penny less if you want it done properly.

Having a series1 roadster I have significant familiarity with these cars.I think you should pass. You will be replacing the entire body.No doubt hundreds of small parts are missing. This will a headache for years.Buy the best car you can afford ,import if needed, and enjoy the car from day one.Anything can be saved but unless all the work is done to a very high standard you could end up with a 6 figure nightmare. You get what you pay for and while this advice is free I think there is value in it . Good luck,Mike

Looks like a "needs everything" restoration. Even the high volume shops like Classic Showcase would pass on that car at $0.

This car started out looking similar to the one your considering. A fun project that kept me busy for over a year. It required a mostly new body shell and a huge box of cash to get this far. Well over $100K in todays dollars. These pictures were taken shortly before it went to the trim shop for a navy blue leather interior and top.
