Michael. The only way this would work from the factory would be an exact copy. So,3.8 ,6 cylinder . Otherwise there is no point. I see that there were 16 XK SS,following the loss of nine in a factory fire. I believe I am right in saying that converting a D Type to full street spec, complete with all weather protection was dreampt up by Duncan Hamilton. He was one of Jags retained drivers, but also a Dealer. He constructed this converted D for his client,Jumbo Goddard. The factory saw it ,and decided to do a limited run

Would be interesting if any other manufacturers also did this, Ferrari 250SWB/Maserati 300S/BMW 328.

Reminds me of when Datsun did the refurbished 240Z cars through Pierre'Z. Wasn't a big success, but very cool idea, and now those refurbed Z's are desirable.

I think it is self evident that this won't happen.

You cannot manufacture cars that don't meet the current safety regulations unless they are either self assembly or from a very small volume (which Jaguar most certainly is not)

I am with you there John. In a link, the factory suggested that 'new' lightweight E Types would be for track use. But a 'new' SS would be a street legal vehicle which,as you say, would have to feature so many modern alterations to conform. I can only see this ,if it should happen,as simply reviving the SS logo, but in something(maybe retro style) as a modern production car.

What he did was sell the frame
    and body
and you would go down the street to an unaffiliated firm to get the
    engine put in.
They have no air bags, no side door guard beams, no GPS, no power steering, now power brakes, no this, no that, they are just pure car.

I think there's a lot of countries where they could sell them, after all if you are say, Prince Jefri of Brunei, you make the rules...

Not quite. RS Williams made them, AML sanctioned them, precisely to get around this problem as I understand it.

Nissan also did it with the R34 when they made the Z-Tune R34 GTR. Found a few used R34s in good shape and basically rebuilt them as new and improved.

i wonder if there is an angle for car companies to reproduce vintage cars exactly as they were in the day....

think of the huge margins ?

I think that the XKSS was built primarily as a means to dispose of parts originally in line the outdated, no longer competitive D type. After 16 were built the factory fire destroyed most of what was left.
William Lyons was an extremely cost sensitive automobile manufacturer.

And the huge legal bills and fines for non-compliance with modern regulations.

Just as you can't decide to do "retro" child labour in factories, you can't just build cars that are ,by today's regulations, unsafe. If you could, what would be the point of the regulations? You could just ignore them with impunity..
