I don't know if anyone else has posted on the latest on the 540 - a Search revealed nothing - so I started a thread. McLaren 540C unveiled - the most affordable supercar ever? | Evo Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
What's wrong with it? Same idea as other manufacturers. A little less power, a few less standard performance options, some minor cosmetic changes, and a lower price. 540C has 30hp less, slightly different aero, no CCB, probably some minor standard option differences, and it cost $20K less. R8 V10 vs R8 V10+ Porsche Turbo vs Porsche Turbo S Both of these cars are competitors for it and follow the same sales strategy. A lot of people want the car more than the performance. If you don't care about the last few 10ths, then 540C might be for you.
I think the difference is McLaren is doing this in the opposite order. Usually you get the Turbo..then the Turbo S. The AMG..then the AMG Black. Basically all the other manufacturers start with a more basic care, and then release faster more hardcore models as they go. McLaren is going the other way and dumbing down the model.
Really? Well, that would be a huge disappointment. The car looks to be a smash hit if it lives up to its potential. According to McLaren's media website MAC says "...Globally available and priced from £126,000, the 540C Coupé can be pre-ordered now with deliveries scheduled to being in early 2016.". I imagine NA is part of MAC's global market. Where did you get your MAC press release from?
Actually McLaren is telling buyers about both models up front before they go on sale. Seems like a pretty honest approach to me.
I agree, Most likely they should have started with the 540 then maybe the 650. The 540 and 570 seem too close to me. Seems like they are trying to throw a few things (cars) against the wall to see what will stick.
Turbo and Turbo S came out at the same time with the 991. The R8 V10 an V10 Plus will also both be available from day 1.
Just my $.02 but Porsche can do that (have different levels of the 911) as it is established and there is to someone else's point above, a higher volume base model. McLaren is more of an exotic/specialty company without all of this consumer car history; so the cache that a McLaren buyer expects to have gets minimized a bit with these 3 levels (not counting the P1). From their perspective I am sure this is economical, helps get economy of scale, and to someone's point above - see where the sweet spot is. A marketing trick since way back is to offer 3 levels where the bottom level serves to push the buyer into the mid and top models. But right now I can barely tell them apart - need more time to digest.
It won't equate to US MSRP as delivery and other charges will vary, but L126,000 = 189705.60 USD at the moment Maybe a used 12C is a better starter McLaren?
Yeah, and to make matters worse the 540C looks better outside and inside, at least from photos. Plus, you get a new car warranty, colour and options you want. BTW, the story from Motorauthority.com says "...Pricing for the U.S. market starts at just $165,000, and we can confirm that deliveries will commence in early 2016...".
Maybe a little, but not that much. A 570S in good spec will run your $210-220K most likely. That's still $50K over a 12C. Not an insignificant gap IMO.
But 2012 model 12c will be 4 years old in latter part of this year So IMO 570S customer would not be thinking between the two
570 is 185K and from what they told me at the show fulley speced, ie you can choose a stereo or wheels and thats about it. Yes a MP12 in theory has more power, but thne you are justa tune away from what 700hp. My guess is the 570 with more conventional suspesion is going to feel and drive nicer than the mp12 which feels disconected to me. Plus the 570 is way better looking. The real quetsion will be a year or two from now 190k for a 570 or 120K for a used mp12 spider. Then of course if 570's derreciate like porche TT 5 years from now it will be a 100k used 570.
As will almost any late model production car. Folks who are posing in the car won't care, but the 12 C has active aero and active suspension, that the 540 and 570 lack, not to mention greater horsepower. Frankly, I see significant downward price pressure on the Lamborghini Huracan, as it is heavier and also lacks active suspension and aero. You want to pose in the latest and greatest exotic-looking car, be 540 is a great choice instead of a much more expensive Huracan.
Hurucan may have more pose value, not least the lambo name. I thoought it looked good in photos but was really very bland in the flesh, quite ho hum. As to Mp12 vs 570s. the 570s gets me excited in a way the mp 12 does not, partly its purse looks thing, and partly prive vs what it tis. I also have a strong suspision that the subjective drivign experience of the 570 is greatly enhanced over the mp12. Still woudl one tale a 570s of a gt3 rs?
540c is the exotic to get for anyone who still has to work for a living. its beautiful in person (i saw 570), great performer, unique, rare. only downside to me is lack of high reving na engine. but no one has that anymore as theyre all going turbo. why would anyone take a porsche over this? will be interested to see it compared to new r8 and nsx
