Imho, if it were a resto mod made to look like a race car, then alloys. Otherwise, wires.

As form follows function, the wires are nice for a car that's just used as a driver. If you plan to use the car for some rallying and/or autocross, the alloys are the way to go.

 

E-types look great with wire wheels.

I do love the dunlops but it will have to be wires if it were my car
