My mother in Florida has a new neighbor who traded his beach house for the house next door. One problem is the beach house had a garage, but the new one doesn't. So this lonely MG is sitting outside. Neighbor says he brought the car 20 years ago, and it is not currently running. He also said he would like to sell it.

So car spotters? What year? What is it worth? Any interest in the car? I need someone to snap it up before I do something stupid. My wife, who is a lot smarter than me, would kill me if I got another crappy Brit POS that doesn't run.

I wonder what it is worth ? Or I wonder how much it would cost to buy.

I haven't a clue. I've been thinking about asking the guy, but I'm afraid of the answer! I just hate to see it sitting in the rain.

So for a non-running car with viable surface rust - $5,000?

    $20k - $30k seems to be the ball park - https://classiccars.com/listings/find/1958/mg/mga

That's probably fair... but the truth is, as per any non-runner with unknown history, whatever someone is willing to pay. BaT has a bunch of MGAs for sale in much worse condition that seem to be around $3k...

From the photo and given that the tyres are all pumped up it may actually be in OK condition... but the cost of restoring the car to good running condition could blow out and be more than the car is worth... the real question on this is "do you want to do it?" If you would enjoy doing the work go for it! All the parts will be readily available and there will be more than sufficient technical support available on the web.

There is a big business in restoring MGA's in UK. As mentioned, plenty of parts available, and plenty of specialist restorers ,some who do nothing but 'A's and 'B's. Up and running daily driver would be around £GBP 25000,concours,probably 40K. As found maybe 6K ?You may be wise to get it running, and also consider the auction route.

I've seen lots of halfway decent running condition MGA's for well under $30k. The best one in the world might be worth $60k, just a guess.

$30k - $35k gets you a fully restored excellent top of the line example. $15k - $20k for a nice example but with some wear and tear and/or a little rust and a so/so interior. I was looking at these for a little while, REALLY cool cars.

Unfortunately for you, the car is in Pensacola, which is the other side of the moon. Let me double check and see if the owner wants to sell.

MGAs had three versions of taillights. This car shows the earliest style. My guess is that this car is between 1956 and 1958, a 1500cc model. Bear in mind, that these cars were often titled as from the year sold, not the year of manufacture. Middle taillight version has two lenses per side and the final version,, the Mk2s, moved the taillights from the fenders to the body just below the trunk lid.

As far as pricing goes...use a current Hemmings as a guide, although, the cars advertised may be in better condition as "running" cars and not project vehicles like this one. As far as MGAs go, this one is the least desirable of the four variations due to having the smallest engine displacement.

MGAs handle like go-carts. Very fun to drive!

Just to be clear, there's no way I can have anything to do with this car, too much going on personally. But I hate to see it sit outside. If any of you are serious, PM and I'll contact the owner.

The single brake lights in the rear along with the non-recessed front grill are definite indicators the MGA is a "1500 Series" & not a "1600 Series"

    This website is VERY USEFUL!!!..

    http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/buying/buy101.htm

    I have "2" MGAs..."1" being a 1960 Convertible & "1" being a 1958 Coupe, both original California RUST FREE black plate cars.

My experience has been...GREAT cars!...HUGE APPEAL & Bang for the buck.

Hand full of spanners & basic car knowledge provides the owner with the necessary tools & skills to have an Extremely Enjoyable ownership.

As far as "value"...I'll start the bidding at...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l91ISfcuzDw

You need any additional information Please feel free to send me a PM!

The most highly coveted & MOST $$$$ are the RARE 1958 "Twin Cam" version...

A high-performance Twin-Cam model was added for 1958. It used a high-compression (9.9:1 later 8.3:1) DOHC aluminium cylinder head version of the B-Series engine producing 108 hp (81 kW; 109 PS). Due to detonation problems, a 100 bhp (75 kW; 101 PS) low-compression version was introduced later.[6] Four-wheel disc brakes by Dunlop were fitted, along with Dunlop peg drive knock-off steel wheels similar to wheels used on racing Jaguars, unique to the Twin-Cam and "DeLuxe" MGA 1600 and 1600 MkII roadsters. These wheels and chassis upgrades were used on a small number of the "DeLuxe" models built after Twin-Cam production came to a halt.[7] Aside from the wheels, the only outside identifier was a "Twin-Cam" logo near the vent aside the bonnet. A careful look at the rear wheel vents would also reveal another feature unique to Twin-Cam and DeLuxe: those 4 wheel Dunlop disc brakes mentioned above.

Hot diggity. So this is in Pensacola/GB? We are leaving here tomorrow to head down there for the weekend. I'd love to go look at it and possibly drag it home. Please PM me appropriate details.

    Or replacement...... ;)

But shhhhh, don't let the TD hear us talking like this. They become unpredictable when angry.

As does my wife, which is why I'd probably need to find something to sell if I drag home a non running MGA!

It's a different driving-experience than the TD. Not necessary "better," just different. Engines and other mechanicals almost identical. One thing to remember when driving the "A," is that drivers in SUVs ahead of you, say at traffic lights, can't see you because you are so low to the ground. You really have to keep your distance.

Good luck! I hope you are able to buy it! Gullwing would advertise it, as a non-runner or project-car for around $10k. Offer 8 and see what happens. Use current Hemmings as a price-guide when negotiating.

A lot will depend on up close inspection. This car lives in a salt air environment, so corrosion is a huge concern even compared to the typical old British car corrosion concern. Mechanicals are one thing, but I don't want a project that requires a bunch of rust repair. It looks clean and straight from the pics though, so we shall see. Fingers crossed!

And yes, I'd be very interested in experiencing the different feel of the A vs the TD and the B's and Midgets I've driven. Now that I think about it, it is the only one of the common MG models (T series, A, B, Midget) that I've never driven or ridden in. Need to be able to cross it off my list!
