further to the garage fire story, dad bought this at amelia today 1961 Jaguar XKE Series 1 Convertible - Amelia Island Select March 2015 at $145k+com, i think he absolutely stole it.
only the first 500 cars had outside bonnet latches. but there were 7827 flat floor convertibles built
Congrats on the pickup. Seems like it was well bought. I hope the process of replacing what's lost brings a bit of fun to a bad situation.
yes, but.....no decision yet on what it will be. my own preference is for a lightweight, but dad still leaning towards a speedster.
yes, it is. the situation was a bit unexpected tho. before he got to amelia we had agreed to just wait until the insurance issues had been cleared, and i convinced him that time was on our side since my feeling is the market is softening and will drop a little more. but then this flat floor, condition 1, was on the docket and we agreed at anything less than 150 it was a steal....and there you go. imo, this is about a 35% drop on last year's average for flat floors, so a good buy. it was #1068 made and i guess about april or may 1961. the engine was rebuilt by stuart plant from crow, which is a good thing. i think it is a safe investment as well as a sweet ride. it is going from amelia to tzikouris to see if anything needs fettled, and will be home by thursday. the problem then becomes where to put it !!! part of our delay tactic was to have the building sorted out, but obviously that hasnt happened yet. so if anybody has some spare garage space in naples, please speak up !
compared to this one it really seems like a bargain ! Bonhams : 1961 Jaguar E TypeChassis no. 875053Engine no. R1101-9 ok, this is car 53 vs ours at car number 1068, but made in the same year. he has outside latches, we dont. but i dont think that is justification for an extra $200k !! so either he paid too much, or we paid too little...or both.
I think you both got what you paid for. I think A. Hudsons car was the great deal on an XKE. Enjoy the car and please don't put an LS7 in it ;-).
that may be right. but i can easily say i am glad we didnt pay that much for any etype! no LS7 intentions.....did somebody actually do that??
Many years ago, some people would pull the 6 cyl and put in ford V8s for reliability. When I had mine it was a concour car and I wanted to drive it so I made some changes to suspension, cooling, exhaust and the best change was to electronic ignition. They are beautiful.
..you can still find some ill-informed owners who do. A hamfisted family friend converted the E-Type his father handed down to him with a Chevy SB two years ago... even sold the original engine to defray costs. If there is any consolation, it was a Series 3. Sorry to interrupt this otherwise fabulous thread... Congratulations with the purchase! - Art
Lumps were/are a thing. Anyway, I think the early car was a bit of an outlier-- may even been a wise buy for a true collector. However, if you plan on driving, yours was a better bet. I totally need to snag a ride in one Enjoy!
i need more info on this car. i know it was part of the san diego collection, but when chuck schwimmer died, the collection was sold on. i spoke to his former curator - david young out in san diego, but he left before they sold it. he thought it had gone to the malcom pray collection (and he did in fact have a 61 flat floor), but it was a different one. so here is the plate with the chassis and engine numbers, if anybody can help me find info i would appreciate it. I would look at Jag-Lovers or a specialty forum-- lots of knowledgeable people there. Also, Jaguar Heritage has been great in my experience.
Hi, Yes, unlike Classiche, the JHT ceritificate does not cost much. When you order a certificate, tell them and possibly send photos of the numbers so they can verify them from the build sheet. And I hope you are aware of this nice resource? XKE Data - 876069 - Jaguar E-Type (XKE) information, articles, photos and register Cheers, Pekka T. (& #1S20183) Fin.
thanks pekka. yes i know about that site. i also joined jaglovers.com today and am seeking more info there. will also get the JHT asap so we can pursue with that too.
Ross: I also own a 3.8 E-type and I often refer to forum.etype.com as a reference site. Especially useful is their "Factory Fit" thread which illustrates, in excruciating detail, the original finishes, fittings, colors, equipment, tools, decals, etc. Through this site I discovered that my expensive, 100% complete tool-roll was actually incorrect for an early E-type...it was for an XK-150. Damn.
