A handful of FOGers are competing in the 24 Hours of Lemons next weekend at Infineon Raceway. As the producers of the event have stated, "Mental health professionals and scrap metal collectors will be standing by..." so feel free to come out and cheer us on in our 19-something Mitsubishi Eclipse. No entered car can have a value of over $500.

Endurance racing for $500 cars. It’s where Pintos and Maseratis battle to lap a hearse. It’s where first-time racers dice with Nomex-wearing pros. Sound like fun? Then you don’t want to miss the 24 Hours of LeMons at Infineon Raceway, March 24-25.

While all this foolishness is primarily done in the name of fun, it’s also done in the name of charity, as all proceeds benefit Speedway Children’s Charities, the charitable arm of Infineon Raceway.

If you’re expecting throaty stock cars or high-performance open-wheel machines, forget it! This endurance road-racing series, which has 19 events coast-to-coast in 2012, was founded on a particularly bad idea: all cars must be bought and prepared for no more than $500.

“America is the land of opportunity — all you need is one bad idea,” quipped Chief Perpetrator, Jay Lamm, a Bay Area resident.

The madness even extends off track. Race officials? They often wear powdered wigs. Race purse? The winner is paid in a sack full of nickels ($1,500 to be exact).

Spectator tickets will be available at the gate for $20 per day or $30 for the weekend, which includes all access! For more information on this wild and wacky series, visit 24hoursoflemons.com.

The FOG should pitch in together to buy/sponsor a car driven by Dr. Italiani, the guys at SF Motorsports and any other FOG member who wants in. With a price ceiling of $500, if we divided it among our members it would come out to less than the cost of a fast food meal for everyone!

I agree. Let's see how we do, then we can form another team for the next race! It would be great to have a few FOG teams in the race

I am already looking at a car and have sent out emails to a few FOG members I know well...

Racing is a great way to get to know some of you other Fogsters I don't know, better !

I was thinking also that it's a great way to learn the right line around the track. I've been wary of taking my real car to Infineon - the walls on some turns seem way to close - give me Thunderhill or Laguna Seca any day - but I'd be a lot less worried with a lemon racer!

I'm glad to hear there's another FOGer interested in the track -- it may be time for another FOG invitational out at Thunderhill. N4S you can drive our Lemons car if you like...
