Does anyone have experience in popping open the plastic covers on the rearview mirror assembly so as to access power to hardwire the power cable for a radar detector? I'm not sure how the covers are clipped in and don't want to break anything.

I would suggest you spend a little money and have your dealer do the install.

Yes. My dealer ran the wire down through the mirror of my 458 spider into the electric box near my left foor when driving. the detector turns on when the ignition is on and off when the ignition is off.

would not take the chance of messing up the electrics on a $200k+ investment.
