    Hi Guys

I have been around this board for a while now but this is my first time posting/starting a thread. I have been cross-shopping a few cars and I am still undecided on what I want (I have had a look at all the cars in question more than once but have not driven them). The cars in question are the Audi R8 V10 Spyder (2011-2013), Porsche 911 CS Cab (991) / Porsche 911 Turbo Cab 997 (2008-2011) and of course, the Ferrari California (2009-2013). I am pretty much settled on the California, however, I plan on buying 2 cars out of the ones I have mentioned and they will both be used as daily drivers/fun everday cars (I have a 2012 Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera as my sole fun car).

My question is, which 2 cars out of the above mentioned cars will complement each other the best?

I'd like to thank everyone in advance for their time and help and I hope to be an active member going forwards.

    Y.M,

I currently own a 991 C2S and think it's miles better than the 997 Turbo. It is super crisp and responsive, and an overall nice car. Cali and 991 CS for sure. Besides, if you got a Gallardo, I don't see the point of getting an R8 V10.

Thanks for the reply DK. The reason why I am considering an R8 is because.I spend my time between 2 cities (I forgot to mention that I live in South Africa), most of my business deals are outside of the city I live in so I basically live in 2 cities at a time. I love my LP570 but I rarely spend time at home to drive it often so I thought I could make up by having an R8 V10 in my other city. So to allow everyone to further understand, I will be buying 2 cars as I want a DD for both of my homes. Also, do you have a C2S cab or Coupe?

Hi Marmist, that may be a solution but it is a lot cheaper to get a 991 and a Cali. An F12 costs around $600K in SA without any options of course.

Yea sorry about that I'm actually in sunny South Africa (which isn't so sunny right now). A 2012 FF can be had for around $350K. Would really love to get one! But I really do think I need 2 cars and I'm really only looking at convertibles. Would love an FF in the future though.

I kinda like the chop top look of a soft top but I guess overall hard is much better (haven't owned a hard top convertible yet so Cali will be my first). Do you DD your Cali? If so, have you had any issues with it?

I am agreeing with Marmist, the 2 cars you are selecting will be 2 close to each other unless you want to track the car. If you want a great DD, perhaps get a new CaliT or a 14 Cali. Perhaps look at a 458 ?

The Cali 30 is much better than the older one. So if u go for the Cali, get an used 30.

A 2013 Cali will be under warranty til 2016, have 7 years of maintainance and wont give u particular problems.

Hey Royalpar, I will not be tracking these cars as I do have an LP570-4 so it will be pure DD. Is there any reason I should go with a 14 Cali (non T) as opposed to a 09-13?

Mmmm, I fail to understand why anyone would substitute a coupe, regardless of whether it has a Ferrari V12, if he is trying to pick two convertibles.

    Is a 458 Spider really a DD?

Wow, I didn't think that the Cali 30 will be MUCH better than the older cali's. The price difference on the ones currently for sale is around $60 - $100K extra for a cali 30. Worth the extra money?

The 2014 Cali is essentially the same as a 2013 Cali as both are California 30s.

The 14 Cali would have an extra year of original warranty. As for the included options for a used car, you simply pick the car with the ones you want at a competitive price. The Cali30 was a mid-life upgrade to the original Cali and was shipped as MY2013-2014. It's also generally safer to buy cars from the last years of their model runs.

Well the CaliT is even better, but then again you'd need to combine the money and wait to get one. 100k is A LOT more though. Here in italy price difference is around 30k euros or even less. U sure is 100k ?
Also as 4th gear said, stay away from EARLIER models (like 2009) and get a safer 2013/14

depends on how much he drives it and on which roads. Any Fcar can be a daily driver, u just need to drive it daily :)

If you live in a country where water gets deep on the street when it rains, of course DONT drive an Fcar there in those days. Other than hydrolocking, I dont see any other problems. He's looking for 2 convertibles so maintanance for long use is not a problem for him.

IMO, the Cali30 offered the same spirit of upgrade to the original Cali as the 430 Scuderia to the F430 and the 458 Speciale to the 458 Italia. Ferrari upgrades all of their original models with similar upgrades to maximize the potential of each car model before moving on to a replacement model.

Look up the technical specifications/options and reviews of these cars and then get in some decent test drives.

IMO, the 458 Spider garners too much attention in most places, making it difficult for the driver to go about his/her daily routine without unwanted attention. It's also not as comfortable for long drives. Not having a back seat also makes it less practical when you are shopping or if you have children.

Other than that, any Fcar can be a daily driver if you persevere driving it daily to (and parking it at) any possible location.

Thanks guys. From the reviews I have read and videos I got the impression that the cali 30 was marginally better overall than older cali's. And yes, it is 100k depending on the year. 09-11 go for $200k-260k. 12-14 are going for $260k-$340k fully loaded. Also, I don't see myself DD'ing a 458 so that's out of the question.

I wouldn't trust journo reviews or videos - I'd do my own test drives. Every driver has his/her (different) level of sensitivity. Even driving different samples of the same MY car, especially a used one, can present very different driving impressions.

I usually do not do test drives but I will be looking at cali 30's more closely.

The Cali is definitely the most livable car offering a little bit of everything. I sat in a 458 spider the other day and I was almost hitting my head on the roof with the seat in its lowest position. I am 6"2. Definitely sit in them for extended periods for comfort. I find the Cali even more comfortable than my merc sl

I would recommend the Cali 30 in one place and the new Porsche in the other. I had a 997.2 4S cab and it is a great car, but the 991 is better. Especially the Cab. Quieter with the top up (I mean less wind). If I had to pick between new CS and old turbo, I would pick the new. Especially for a DD.

    That is my 2 cents.

    John

Of course if only picking one it would be the California... :D
