if the Cali T has about the same motor/HP as that of the 458, why is the spec on the 458 0-60 time so much faster ?

I believe the gear ratios are different.

Also down to weight. The kerb weight of the 458 is 3076lb as opposed to 3813lb for the Cali T.

Take a 458 out for a drive and you will see that they are completely different rides. This difference cannot be described in 0-60 numbers ..

Completely apples and oranges. And yes, the 458 does have a rather aggressive gearing compared to the other models in the lineup. Besides that, the MR layout of the 458 provides much better traction off the line, and on all fronts it's just much more of a sports car where the Cali is a soft GT by comparison. It's like comparing an Audi RS5 to an R8.

Ferrari could have easily mapped the engine of both the California NA and the Cali T to have greater torque and HP. In fact the caliT was dumbed down a lot. I suppose Ferrari wanted to have an easy way to offer more performance for both the "Fifth Year" send off model and then for the next generation Cali T.

It's a shame Ferrari didn't give a little more torque and HP to the Cali T. she needs it.

458 has wider tires too so better traction, more Aft weight distribution, and the 800 pound difference is a lot. Having owned a cali30 and now a 458 spider, I can tell you the personalities are very different. The Cali is more of a very sporty cruisers 458 is a junior race car

Both are amazing vehicles. The Cali T that I drove feels very strong and has more torque that the 458. I would bet on a dragstrip the 458 would only be a few seconds faster. On racetrack, because the 458 is more nimble and lower, the separation would be greater. On the street, it would feel probably pretty similar.

I did not realize it would come within 3.5% of the F12's track time. Perhaps on a larger track the difference might be wider, but it is very impressive.

Where I live (Johannesburg, South Africa) the CaliT has better performance figures than the 458!
Amazing you may think, but it's down to altitude above sea level. Jo'burg is at 5800ft so the turbos in the CaliT compensate for lower atmospheric pressure and you get the full 553 HP. The normally aspirated 458 loses about 10% of it's power.
Something to consider when buying a car at altitude.
