I went to Futureshop to get a virus removed from my computer because none of my anti-virus scanners were picking up anything. They told me they could do it but they have to clean out my hard drive and start fresh. I was ok with that as long as they backed it up for me. I got it back last friday but they told me that the hard drive they used crashed with most of my files were still on there (Mainly all my photos). You can imagine how furious I am feeling. They said to me they will send it out to a 3rd party to get it restored. Today I go in and they tell me that they will have an answer for me by wednesday. I know most of you are thinking why didnt I back up before hand. It is because my removable hard drive wasn't big enough and I just didnt have the time to buy a new one and get it. My question is: Are all my files gone since they wont have answer till wednesday or Do I have a very good chance they will be able to recover? I have asked a few and I am getting both answers.

Apparently, data recovery is so advanced that they can recover even old files that you deleted. It's insanely expensive but if it's that important to you, perhaps you should spend the money

Deleting files doesn't get rid of files nor does formatting drives and can usually be recovered with simple programs at home. Crashed drives, even those in a fire can be usually be recovered with varying degrees of success, this is done by data recovery specialists.

Unless the data was intentionally erased using special software, physically crushed or electro magnetically zapped, there is a good chance you can get your data back.

Google toronto digital recovery, or where ever you are from, there are a bunch of companies listed.

Next time stay away from Future Shop and the big box stores. There are plenty of independant IT guys who work at reasonable rates.

    Good luck
