I think that a previously US car is duty exempt...so if you buy a a car that was originally sold in the US, then imported to Canada ( quite a few have been brought in to Canada in the last few years due to the exchange difference ), you dont have to pay that duty

To bring back a previous American car duty free, you need the original U.S. title or a copy of a state registration or the export documents. In other words proof it was in the U.S. and duty paid.

For DOT and EPA, you need a letter from the manufacture stating it meets them.

Believe if you export a Canadian market car, most manufactures void the warranty.

Customs website says: "Re-Importing A Previously Exported Vehicle
A vehicle taken from the United States for non-commercial, private use may be returned duty free by proving to CBP that it was previously owned and registered in the United States. This proof may be a state-issued registration card for the automobile or a bill of sale for the car from a U.S. dealer. Repairs or accessories acquired abroad for your vehicle must be declared on your return and may be subject to duty."
