Incredible....another supplier, complicate to change? But how many are you building at the same time?
The difference is negligible. Never had a dispute in 25 years. This is nit picking This color can change based on who mixes the paint and what manufacturer, the primers used, etc. To be as consistent as possible I always use the same brand and the same grey primer.
Grey primer actually makes FER300 looking similar to Fiat 120. So it's a nearly perfect match. I recently made a color template on a piece of sheet metal for my real car, painted in FER300 (Glasurit solvent based base coat + clear ) With grey primer it was completely wrong. With white primer the FER300 template matches my car perfectly, but maybe too bright for these old race cars. One could also debate about the gloss. Actually today's two pack paint systems are much too glossy. But who would want such a dull finish like on the real cars? Best Regards Martin
correct about the gloss. Ferrari did not use clear coat on the racing cars in the sixties and early seventies primer + red paint
This has been going on for a long time. I clear all of my models over the decals to preserve them. I also wet sand and polish them to tone down the hard gloss. 95% of my clients prefer this over exposed decals. Some companies like BBR put the decals over shiny paint which is a production decision but the paint should be toned down in my opinion.
In any event here are the decals in place prior to the clear coat... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
So it's unnecessary to put a thin layer of clearcoat prior to the decals? I always performed this to prevent 'silvering' and never tried without. Like said, a VERY thin coat, to prevent too much build-up. Best Regards Martin
Totally depends on the quality of the decals and the color of the base coat. I do a scratch coat on most metallic colors especially silver. Also when painting multiple colors. In this case there is virtually no carrier film on the decals and no transparent areas so it's not necessary.
Very nice work Peter ! For the decals, all depends of the technical tolerances imposed by the printing. But In this case, the width of the carrier film (varnish) is 0.15mm (0,0059').
You actually use automotive paint? Glasurit (PPG) FER300 is a two part paint. Is this what you use or some kind of equivalent? -F
Final clear prior to color sanding and polish work. At this stage the finish has a "liquid" appearance. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks. As a side note the holes will be covered with photo etched riveting so I am not concerned if some got covered. Here is a sample of how they will look in the end. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I'm curious, if you don't mind, what clear coat do you use and what polishing compound do you use? In the past I have used Tamiya's acrylic clear coat so it doesn't eat the decals and Griot's polish because that is what I have on hand but I'm not sure they are the best combo. -F
I rarely use "hobby" or commercial products. That said... Two coats of 2 part Nason Urethane Clear [medium temp] scratch coat that is wet sanded flat with 1000 wet/dry, followed by two more coats of the clear...then: I wet sand the clear with a 1000 wet/dry paper first [using soapy water] until the clear is completely flat. I follow this with a 2000 wet sanding and finally a 5000 sanding with a rotating pad. I then machine polish with a cotton attachment on my Dremel hand held at low speed very carefully with minimal pressure. I start with 3M cutting compound and finish of with Finesse It. My secret is now out. Expect to spend 5-6 hours for the whole process [minimum on a 1/12 like the 312P]
