    Hi,

Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on using paint protection on older original paint? I have a 1984 car with original paint in great condition, would like to drive the car and keep the paint in great condition.

Not sure if when you go to remove the film at some point would it pull the paint up or damage it?

Thanks for any info or experiences you can share.

    Jason

There is always a slight chance paint could come up. We have pulled film off of many cars and only had one time that paint was removed. Paint came up because the bumper was repainted and the film was applied way too soon, the owner bought the car not aware of the repaint (458). Ferraris tend to have thinner paint and pose a higher risk but if done right you could remove it and be ok.

The biggest thing is making sure you go to a professional who uses the right adhesive. If they use the wrong one when it comes time for removal it could ruin the paint.

I had a PPF done on some of my older cars. Now I've never needed to remove it cause they have always looked amazing. But I was told if for some reason I ever get it removed the adhesive won't ruin the paint. Not sure if you are still in NY, but if you are ever in San Diego I know just the place for you to go.

There is also the option of clear coating the original paint. I've seen that done on several 60's cars. Sort of seals everything up, cracks, chips, etc., giving an aged look but wit modern protection from further deterioration.

My personal opinion is drive it until it really needs repainting, then just repaint it. Cars get dings. Part of life.

What about ceramic coatings on older paint? I think i'm a little gun-shy on the film. I spoke with a technical rep at Opticoat who said the ceramic coatings will work just fine on single stage paints, and said you really need the product more on singhle stage since there is no clear. Does anyone have experience using ceramic coatings on older paint?

    Thanks

I wouldn't go as far as saying you "need" it because it's single stage. I have used Cquartz Finest on many single stage paints and they hold up very well. Granted they were older Ferraris and a Countach that aren't daily driven but they look fantastic. No matter what anyone says, ceramic coatings will not prevent dings, rock chips or anything like that. Ppf will always be the go to for that stuff.

I too have had great success with ceramic coating(s) on single stage paint. And MobileJay has given excellent info on what ceramic coatings can not do.

Thanks for all of the feedback, guys. I'm going to go with a ceramic coating for now. Not comfortable about the film on the original paint yet. I need to find the right installer locally who has a successfull track record with some similar vintage car to see.

If you are in NY give Nelson a call. He does all of the PPF for Wide World Ferrari and he is meticulous. He can tell you if it's a good does for your car and what to expect. I think it would be a good way to put you at ease with what ever decision you go with.
