Suggestions for a gift of Scotch . ( I am completly in the dark on this, I prefer bourbon) Last year I gave McCallum . I do know it is single malt. How does J. Walker Blue stack up ? It is blended I think. Thanks in advance.

How much do you want to spend? Blue is good, but expensive. If you're going for a blend, Dewars 12-year is the best value for the buck, in my opinion anyway. Around 30-35 bucks a fifth.

Lagavulin or Glenmorangie. Both unique, distinct scotches that a scotch drinker probably doesn't have in their cabinet and would appreceiate. JWB is actually very good and a nice gift.

+1 on the Lagavulin 16, my favorite. Big however...This is a very smokey scotch and not for everyone. I come from a long line of scotch drinkers and neither my father or his father will go near it.

Edward- Depends on whether you want a Tain (smooth) or west country (peaty taste) Scotch. My favorite Tain scotch is Aberlour. My favorite west country scotch is Lafroigh.

Never drink or give The Glenlivet unless it is the only single malt available. The Smith Brothers turned in all the other scotch distillers in the distant past (they hid their barrels in peat bogs to avoid taxes), and received a royal commission for doing so.

If you want something not run of the mill, try:

Glenmorangie "The Nectar D'or" Has gotten some amazing reviews. Matured in Sauternes casks.

I've heard good things about Bowmore, but I've yet to try. Macallan 18 is always a great gift, but at $140-150 a bottle may be a bit much. I have a great bottle of Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban that is growing on me. I had the JW Blue for the 1st time in Chicago, but I'm not such a fan of the blends.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Depending on how much you're willing to spend and the palate of your recipient, it's hard to beat the value of a Laphroaig 30yr. Avg price is about $225. Fantastic peaty flavor, very well rounded. Much like the previous poster I have Laphroaig 30 and Macallan 25 kicking around for special guests.

I have not really liked lagavulin, though i do have glenmorangie 10yr, (original), Quinta ruban, lasanta, and 18yr. I prefer the 18yr, I do have to say the balvinie 15yr singl cask that founds it's way tome is every bit as good.
