I've been wanting to add a smoker to our outdoor area and was referred to check out the "Big Green Egg." I've not seen it in person yet but have been doing some diligence on the web. Looks pretty sweet. Does anyone have any experience with BGE?

Looking to use it to smoke beef, turkey, etc.

Love mine, have had it a couple years.

Only real downside is the available cooking space. Sometimes I wish it had more. You can fix this with multi-level cooking grids (I have one), but it just isnt as easy as say a box-type smoker where you open up the front to get access to 4 or more shelves.

I use mine for smoking (low and slow) and grilling at high temps, which you can't do with a traditional smoker.

Suggested upgrades: I replaced my gasket with a permatex ultra copper gasket, and the charcoal grate with a high-que grate.

I couldn't imagine not having one now. My old gas grill is only used to cook the occasional hot dog.

There are a bunch of threads here if you search "BGE".

Also, a forum called The Smoke Ring has tons of info.

Weber makes something similar that's about half the price, I saw one at Lowes.

I've had mine for a couple of years and use it all the time for bbqing and making pizzas. I grill on my webbers, my gas grill is where I store all the other stuff. Haven't fired up the gasser in 5 years.

On a serious note, I'm a mod on a Komado grill forum and own several different models. The one that's most versatile is the Primo Oval. I have the JR model and it's a great smoker/grill/brick oven.

There are several ceramic kamodo manufacturers in addition to BGE, including Primo, Kamado Joe, Kamodo Kamado, etc. All will cook the same.

The biggest differene between them is the warranty. Eventually, your firebox will crack, and you'll want a replacement. BGE replaced mine with no issues. I just sent a couple pics, and a few weeks later got my new firebox. I still haven't used it yet, as the old one works fine with the cracks.

And since this thread is worthless without pics: Here's a pic of what I'm cooking up tonight. A small prime rib and sweet potatoes over mesquite charcoal:

Recently bought an XL BGE. No cooking space issue with this one. On the first time I used it, I put two rib racks in it and loaded them up with six full racks of baby backs.

Is it possible to use the bge for regular grilling or is it better to have a separate for normal grilling?

The BGE is a phenomenal griller. It's just a pleasan little treat that it smokes well too.

    Awesome to know. Thanks.

That's what the website says but I wasn't entirely sure. Thinking hard about getting one once my patio cover is up.

FWIW, I got the Vision Grill from Costco since it's more reasonably priced and comes standard with all the extra options BGE charges for.

Very nice unit for the poor people that can't afford a BGE. ;) Just kidding.

Check Costco as they are closing these out in some areas for a good price. Last year they went down to $399, which is a tremendous deal for a great grill/smoker.

The only drawback I've ever heard of is that it doesn't crisp well -- poultry especially. But I'm sure there are ways around this alleged limitation.
