My wife announced that she wants an industrial blender for Christmas. Vitamix or ninja?

Vitamix is the way to go- powerful motor and it will last forever, your wife will never wear it out. You will find one in every professional kitchen.Ninja, just sounds like late night TV.

    What about Blendtec?

I got the urge for one a couple of months ago, but didn't pull the trigger.

Vitamix! Take a peek at any smoothie place and you will notice they use them, that's what sold me.

Or, watch any episode of "Iron Chef."

Or, look at the warranty. :)

Bought my Vitamix direct from their website during a special clearance of their factory reconditioned units - so my (originally $700 model) cost me just over $200 with shipping, but it only has 7 years of warranty. Poor me! :)

A food blender and a smoothie/beverage blender are different. Just keep that in mind when shopping. The vitamin quite one is the best for smoothies and the vita prep 3 is the best for food. I'd get the vita prep 3 which is the one that is used in commercial kitchens not any of the vitamix ones you see even though they are labeled "professional".

Vitamix...the prettier half loves hers! God knows she has thrown everything in it, and it still works like a champ.

Really kinda depends on what her intended usage is. I've used a wide range of blenders from VitaPrep to VitaMix to BlendTec, WaringCommercial and even Hamilton Beach bar blenders. All of them are great blenders and can do just about any job.

Costco carries Blendtec occassionally and my wife bought one from them since the price was discounted. She seems to really like it.

Vitamix is the best but if you want a very good blender for half the price check out the Ninja. I bought mine from Bed Bath and Beyond and have been very happy with it. Its a professional model with a 1100 watt motor.
What will you use the blender for?
