Is this brand of Bourbon as big a phenomenon as I think it is?
I bought a bottle of the flagship 23 year about 3-4 years ago for about $275 and people are now telling me the Bottle minus alcohol is worth that alone!
How hard IS it to get?

    Cheers!

MB…Based on what I have seen in the "What's Your Favorite Bourbon?" thread, the answer appears to be Yes. Another posted a link to a USA Today article about people stealing some barrels of this stuff, so it must be good, if people are going to risk jail time?!? I'd also guess that this means that it is not that easy to get. I just did a quick search of two large DFW chains, and neither had any in stock…T

It has become a commodity and status symbol, similar to vintage Ferraris, where the demand far outstrips supply. In the states, there are two releases a year. Within hours of each the product is sold out with a significant portion going up on the secondary market for multiples of the retail price. It might actually be easier to find in Europe.

More importantly, how did you like it?

    Regards,

    Art S.

tomc, people are risking jail time not for the bourbon but for the $$$. That will always occur. Secondary market for the 23 year is $1k+

Personally I'm not selling mine and will enjoy soon

    I stand corrected. :)

BTW, is that Lake Michigan in the background?!? Pretty view for Pappy van Winkle to enjoy.

I found exactly one bottle for sale this year. 23 year old for $1000. On the second hand market, it was going for $2,500-$3,500.

An Austin bar I was in recently sold it for $300 a shot.

    I think the 10 year was $100.

Plenty of good boubons out there, that are not 1k.

It's the same deal with Screaming Eagle.

I agree. I wouldn't pay over retail for it.

I would pay over retail, but not that much. There is a ton of hype behind Pappy, but it's also the best bourbon I've ever had. The 15, 20, and 23 are all simply great.

Can a mod merge this with the main bourbon thread?

    Thanks,

It's good, but it's not that good.

You can score it at retail if you have a good relationship with a bottle shop, or are super fast on the online ordering at release. But if I don't get it, I don't lose sleep. Plenty of great bourbons out there for sub $100 a bottle.

    Totally agree.

My favorite bar in Tennessee had it for $25 a drink. It was great for a few glasses if your wallet was feeling a bit too heavy. At $300? Crazy, not a chance.

Personally, I prefer traditional bourbon grain bills anyways. Eagle Rare for me.

I just bought a bottle of Old Weller Antique Original 107 which is supposedly made from the same raw distillate that eventually becomes Pappy. According to a recent review, "while you're not in danger of confusing this with that, the family resemblance is there." About 30 bucks.
