Familiar last name. If it is who I am thinking of, I too would be a great driving prospect if my dad owned a racetrack. Jealous... (but this time for good reason.)
It's a great idea. It makes sense to get talented drivers when they're young, train them up, and bond them with the team. Lewis Hamilton has been a bargain for McLaren and Ferrari has finally realised it need not pay the likes of Kimi Raikkonen tens of millions a season when they can grow their own talent at home. Smart move... and about time! All the best, Andrew.
My son races with Lance in Mini Max and he is very quick for sure. He blew everyone away in the rain at the last round of the Winter Tour. Good for him!
When was the last time Ferrari put a rookie in a seat ? They just buy proven talent off of other teams. Which is perfectly OK if you want to spend the bucks for a known quantity. Why bother with a driver development program ?
Hamilton isn't exactly cheap though...for his first year I agree he didn't get 'much' (not aware of his actual salary, but in year 1 he got paid £20K per point in addition of his base, travel expenses etc etc) Right now he got £50m for 3 (or 5?) years in total and IIRC 30K per point..not sure on the last one though, especially with the new point regulations, lol. Sure it's not at the level of Raikkonen (15m for sweet FA ) or alonso....but not a bargain either.
As a fellow Canadian and know how much of a car guy his dad is its going to be great both for Ferrari and the Stroll family. Lawrence owns Le Circuit Tremblant in Quebec, which is annually a host to Ferrari Festival and The Ferrari Challenge Series (+ Historic Challenge). Lawrence has a few great Ferraris of his own. http://www.lecircuit.com/ Here is one of his many Ferraris that he tracks! Chris Image Unavailable, Please Login
He also owns Ferrari of Quebec. I will be seeing him Thursday night, and can't wait to congratulate him.... Kevin
Ferrari scoured the world and found that the best candidate was the son of a dealer. What a happy coincidence!
What if you had your pick of a real 250 GTO, Sunoco 512M, etc, even a 430 challenge, to thrash around the track your father owns? Nice start to a career.
I wouldn't draw such a conclusion, Lance is fast and I mean very fast. Now, having said that just like in every other form of racing the more you spend and faster you will go. Knowing what I spend per year on my 10 year old I would be willing to bet Lance's budget is well north of 100k per and might be close to 200k. Yep, karting isn't as cheap as people thing, at least not at this level.
I can only speak from first hand experience; he has been very nice to my wife & I over the years. Kevin
Ask anyone around Mont Tremblant what he is like. Very arrogant. He is one of those guys who thinks money can buy anything or anyone.
Good article in today's Gazette http://www.montrealgazette.com/sports/Stroll+fast+lane+Formula/3133964/story.html
