Video on the 190E Senna raced at the Ring GP circuit in '84

From evo #185

Quote:
[...] invitation-only race [...] at the opening of the new Nurburgring GP circuit in 1984. There Senna had competed against, and beaten, a stellar array of driving talent -- including no fewer than nine former F1 champions -- all in identical versions of the then-new Mercedes 190E 2.3-16.

(Be sure to watch footage of Senna at 3:54. There's the mortals' notion of at the limit, the F1 Gods', and then there's Senna's.)

Cool 2.3-16

I too loved my 2.3-16. Totaly different car to the regular 190. Mine was a Euro version. I miss it but something broke every month. Finally, the bottom end let go a few months after doing the top-end. I donated it to a local charity. I would really like to look for another but my wife would kill me.

I remeber going to look at an E30 M3 one time. I liked the way it drove but the interior just seemed to be much lower quality than my car.... I passed. Now you can probably get three Cosworths now for the price of a nice M3...

As Prost said later, everybody was taking it easy and having fun, except Senna, that even in a promo stuff like this had to drive flat out.

Just saw an article on this in Evo, they brought the Senna car out in public for the photo shoot and everything.

That was Prost at the time. Ask Lauda if that was true. Right after this race, Surtees told Enzo to hire Senna. In Prost's favor, he got hit hard when he saw a mirror after Senna's death.

I have an '86 Merc E300 (bigger engine, but nearly same body and interior) and I could never drive it like that...not even close.

I'm glad they did that story. The race was the icing that made me buy my Cosworth 190e - the most fun MB I've owned.

At this risk of rationalizing, I have a hard time believing these guys can get together on a track, in identical tracks, and not get seriously competitive for at least part of the event.
