This could be interesting: Formula One Planning To Launch Masters Racing Series Says Ecclestone - Forbes The Top 10 Formula 1 Onboard Engine Noises 2000-2010 - YouTube
Sounds like fun, but the problem I see is: So we'd have a grid of 20 cars from 20 different years. Surely fun to watch, but there wouldn't be much actual racing.
So it's like BOSSGP but with ex F1 drivers only. Hopefully it'll follow the entire calendar (though more likely all European rounds + UAE). Probably consist of 2 half hour ''races'' over the weekend and 1 test session. Bring it on, I say. Won't be much actual racing but to hear the Ferrari V12's, BMW V10's...yes PLEASE!
I was in Hockenheim last weekend for the Hockenheim Historic festival with vintage racing series. Lots of fun to see the old racing cars go around the track, but I think it gets old if you watch it every 2 weeks as it's essentially presentation drives, not real racing. BossGP was in Hockenheim too, horrible. A wild assembly of various modified formula cars from lesser important series (Formula Renault and so on) with non-professional drivers. Surely amazing if you are a driver, not very interesting to watch. Cars without heritage or importance with non-name drivers, not much to see.
Do agree that there are an awful lot of indy car type cars about, competing in a lower class. When I saw it I was more than excited to hear the couple of cars that had their engines still in place. Can you imagine 20 cars, all in the state they last raced in going at it? Not much more than a parade, but nice for the people that are there.
If you put a racing driver in a car he will race. It doesn't matter how old the car or the driver are. This could be great!
The red mist cannot be contained! Hopefully this concept pans out. Demonstration or quasi-racing it's all good and seeing these cars in action is a treat.
I've always been a fan of the idea of vintage engines such as Cosworth DFV or Ferrari flat 12, Marta v12 etc, but with a modern chassis formula.
Interesting idea. Not sure how it would work with crews and parts replacements and all that. If you blow up a Ferrari F1 V12 or crash the car heavily I can't imagine spares are just everywhere. Plus the visual/aural impact of those older cars would embarrass current F1 which wouldn't be good. If it would work, it would have to be a spec series like GP masters. They're not going to have a bunch of 1995-2005 F1 cars out there running around. Just not feasible, IMO.
You can't have them all driving cars from different eras. But you could make it a spec chassis/engine series. Take out a big chunk of the downforce, add in as much mechanical grip as you can, and put in a V12 with a real manual transmission. I would watch the hell out of that.
No way these guys will do that. Swinging a golf club or tennis racket does not carry the same risk as driving 200 at Eau Rouge. But, hearing those engines again did make my day. Much better than the muffled fart that is today's F-1.
It's really not a problem to re-cast those parts. Ferrari and Cosworth for instance have all the molds, the series could perhaps be based on NOT using original engines, but all re-cast.
No no, set chassis rules like they are now, perhaps somewhat different to modern F1 obviously. Old school meets new school.
If the cars where decent, i'd rather watch Alesi, mansell, berger and some other guys rather than the ones we have right now!!
I resemble that remark. Ecclestone is trying to throw something out there to respond to the flood of complaints. Why not improve the show so there's something for everyone.
Well, they tried it once and it didn't work: Grand Prix Masters - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Winding up order served on GPM - GP Masters news - AUTOSPORT.com Creepy Cheever even won one of the races.
F1 was still awesome to watch back then. Not so much today. There would be a large market watching today.
Would they have to run on time handicaps between different era cars and drivers? LOL This way, Roberto Moreno would have a chance in the Andrea Moda S921!
