That's strange. Are they planning on using it?

I really don't know. Maybe they want to use it in historical events. If you look carefully you will see that this is not a tarmac but a cement!

I suspect they are just trying to preserve it as a historic landmark. It was starting to crumble away.

I'm not sure, but while it may have still been "structurally sound", it was certainly getting, let's say, gnarly.

I don't see it as destruction of history, rather an attempt at preservation.

    Cheers,
    Ian

For a while, there was an online petition called savethebanking.com (or something like that)
and they collected a lot of signatures calling on the powers that be to preserve the Monza
    banking.

At least when I attended the Italian GP at Monza in 1989, a young Italian photo journals was very
eager to show me the banking. So, we ventured out there and there were still portions of the old
banking which were in use by club events. Not the entire banking as in the F-1 days,
but sections of it where cars would run on the apron and then a chicane up the banking,
it was easy to see the groove that the clubs had worn into the old concrete.

The refurbished banking looks really nice though. Nice to know that (hopefully) the online petition
    worked.

The pavement is one thing, but I wonder whether any measures were taken to address the underpinnings.

    One would sure hope so!

I know it's Italy, but surely someone must have taken a peek under there before pouring concrete all over it!.... ;)

Didn't a journo/photog discover a stash of old race timing sheets and the like under there recently? I'll see what the Google engine can find....

    Cheers,
    Ian

You are correct. Actually the journo/photog type was given the materials by someone who was in there and found them. They were in there cleaning out the storage areas under the banking. Lets hope it was with a mind for preserving the place.

Don't mind the resurfacing but do hope it is being done with historically correct materials, at least cosmetically.

I mentioned this a while ago in another thread.
It is done to preserve the banking

I don´t understand why resurfacing the banking is a bad thing as the OP is suggesting. I think that sometimes we, the car geeks, are taking the issue of originality and patina too far.

If they strengten the support structure perhaps it'll actually be usable again. Fantastic IMO.

Give it a few years and some proper lines of rubber on it and no one will cry about it. Ever.

You want to see F1 history destruction? Try and look for the old Hockenheimring :(

This is more like a shiny new paintjob for your vintage Ferrari. No problem with that.

    Indeed.

Sadly Hockenheim was a financial decision. I am missing the Ostkurve. :(

But to me the biggest loss is that we don't have a French GP at all. Whether that's Le Castellet, Dijon, Rouen, Reims or even petit Le Mans.

And speaking of Monza, what is the big deal about asphalting the outside of Parabolica?

The various racing websites keep resurrecting this story as if there is some sort of conspiracy
to take away the mystique of Monza due to the fact that they've paved over the gravel traps
    on the famous last turn.

I don't quite get it. Seeing the amount of gravel that comes back onto the racing line if
a driver puts two wheels off at Parabolica should be reason enough to asphalt the area.

Seeing the Banking clean and preserved is FANTASTIC. I doubt they would use if for races, but just the ability to see it clear of all the grass , moss and tree limbs is fantastic.

when i was there last the guard rails were totally rusting away, the cracks were filled with Moss, and the trees were encroaching and dropping sap, & leaves that over the years had accumulated in some spots to a thick green brown gooey mulch... these pics look fantastic.

it would be spectacular to see racing back on the banking BUT the danger is very high, and the surface would I think crack modern Carbon suspensions & drivers backs... so unless they totaly refinished and smoothed out the joints in the concrete I doubt racing will be back... but what a great background for photos of Monza and historic cars!

An awsome picture would be the Ferrari F-1 team up there with the cars and whole team photo!

    Agreed.

If nothing is done then it will only get worse. Then when it collapses I'd imagine OP would have complained about not doing anything.

It will certainly make a fantastic backdrop for photographing vintage race cars.

Meant to ask, what's the new glass you said you were taking along? I guess a big ****-off sized lens to get you up close & personal!? ;)

Actually quite the opposite: 14mm :)

Last time Pirelli had a few F1 on display and I love to crawl all around them but you need a wide angle given all the folks there.
All those winglets are pure car porn to me. :)

As for the track, I'll use my regular 500mm.
