So are we going to hear something different this year? I know the teams and FIA were trying to address the sound of the motors for this season. Any news on it?

What I have heard on a couple of podcasts I listen to is the sound may actually be quieter due to more efficient use of the exhaust gases.

Honda (currently) has a different sound that sounds quite good, but rest will sound mostly the same as 2014 unfortunately.

To me, real Ferraris are always V-12.

Sounded even better in this video, and I don't believe it was at WOT either.

btw, use http instead of https if you want to embed youtube videos. ;)

I surely miss the V12 and V10's. Plenty already said on that, BUT, turbos can sound awesome in their own way. Simple really. Get rid of the all the hybrid cr4p and rev limit, twin turbo, voila!

If you really want to fix things, throw away all the engine regs, limit the fuel for the race. While we're at it get rid of DRS and all the tire rules, let the teams choose what tires they run when and where :)

I think 2016 is when we would see changes with these rumored 1000HP engines (that I think the vast majority of fans want to happen)

Probably more of the same for this year.

I think that a return to two exhaust pipes would improve the sound immediately.

My understanding is that the emphasis in 2016 will be low emissions, good mileage and quiet cars. Ergo, Soap Box Derby rules will be adopted. :D

I've been saying this since the beginning of last year. The major difference between the twin turbo V6 of the 80's and today, is the exhaust configuration. Twin turbo, dual exhaust vs single turbo, single exhaust. Both engines rev about the same, pretty much the same displacement.

Twin turbo just doesn't work with this MGU-H configuration, unless you employ twin MGU-H or some fancy linkages. This current formula is such a mess that it really doesn't want to be "fixed" piecemeal. A patch here, a fix there and you wind up turning Dracula into Frankenstein.

I think two smaller turbos near where the single turbo is now could work with a single MGU-H and some linkage between the turbos.

Actually, the turbos being smaller might not even need MGU-H to keep them spooled up, of course it would be needed to harness electrical energy from them.

12,000 RPMs is not going to generate any decent sound. Better sound.. not awesome sound... but better sound is easily fixed.

Just get rid of this silly fuel restriction nonsense and let the cars run at their full capacity. Give them the fuel to run at 17,000 RPM and I bet things will improve.

The turbo V6 of the 80s ran at around 12k RPMs, same as today, and they sounded way better than today's V6 turbo.

Yes but they didn't have all the ERS stuff further limiting the sound. For these PUs to make noise, they need to let them rev up to capacity. They should do it anyway...not just for the sound but because they're restricting performance which is opposite of what they should be doing.

I think what they are going to end up doing in 2017 is allowing teams to have a reason to rev to 15k rpms, and I believe they will do this by allowing a third 'tier' of fuel allotment at a specific RPM, such as 13,500rpm or something. These power units would wake up a good bit in terms of sound if they only revved and made power up to 15k.

Back in the day, when there were 4, 6, 8 and 12 cylinder cars in a single race, you could tell what cars were where by the sound. The variation was a treat, and some folks were fans of one marque or another based on the sound. So, yes, sound matters. But, I wish we had variety to go with some awesome noise.

About the only place you can hear different-sounding engines nowadays is at sports-car races like Le Mans......
