The 12 & the 10 are far and away the best, the 8 was rev limited so it could have been better I bet, but it was still ok. The turbo is pathetic, hearing them in sequence just crystalizes it.

The 2014 V-6 doesn't even sound like a race engine.

V12 has the best ''melody'' to it, the V10 is the coolest because of how much higher it revved.

I really hope Bernie succeeds in going back to either engine, NO TURBOS!

The V6 turbo has a quality Mr. Dyson could appreciate. I bet it picks up well in corners and high carpet too.....

Wow. Gave me the chills. My vote is for the V10. What a sound! I just wish I was into F1 when they had these cars. My experience is limited to the V8's and now the awful V6 turbo's.

What about the V6s from the 80s they screamed. Remember seeing Ferrari do very well in Canada in 1985.

Frome soley the perspective of a TV viewer.

The V8, V10, sound like dentist drills. The V12 I missed, so its its the V6 that wins.

The extra gear in the gearbox with the V6 hybrids is allowing a narrower powerband to be used, so you don't hear as much rev difference unfortunately last season and this coming season. :(
Bryanp's 4 is something missing from the video. :p

For me it is V10, then V12, then V8 - and I wont even put the V6 in the same class.

Maybe it was the way this particular V12 was being driven - but it wasnt as loud as I remember them.

The best two things about a F1 car - hearing the noise building from 10 secs before you see the car, and the noise on the overrun under braking.

This amateur video does more to show the real sound of F1 than we will ever get from TV - why is that? Different mics?

Based on that V6 I am relived I am not springing for a trip to a GP this year.

The reason, is solo car runs, instead of cutting with the action when the car is on top of the mic and overloading it, you get to hear it approach.

For me the V12 has a sweetness the V10 does not have.
The V8 is clearly being limited from where it could have been.
And the V6 sounds, well, simply like crud.

I love the 80's V6's, when they went past you could feel it in your chest.

The music of the past F1 cars. I remember in the early 90s at Montreal, Ferrari still with the V12 and the rest V10s. You could tell the Ferrari's with your back to the track, At Indy in 2001 at grand stands at end of main straight, during Sat. practice, cars running singular V10s. The glorious sound of the cars coming onto the long straight. Beautiful engine music wow. Would love to hear that again.

In person, I liked the V10 & V8s because the sound was a hearty full-bodied sound that you could feel through your chest and not just the ears.

The V12s were a bit too high-pitched in person and the shrill was very sharp & penetrating...tough on the ears, esp track side.

But on the tube the V12 is the best, then V10.

Gotta go with a good ol' "+1" there.....

The 12's are (almost, but not quite ;)) a little too "shrill". The 10's are about perfect to my (somewhat deaf) ears.....

Having said that, the DFV had the original patent on the overrun 'crackle'..... Best on a cold morning for some reason, but that would get the goosebumps appearing.....

    Cheers,
    Ian

I don't think that the higher RPMs of the 1990s were particularly flattering to the V-12's exhaust note. To me the 12s of the late '60s and the '70s sounded better. Just listen to the Petrolicious segment on the 312 PB at Willow Springs and I think that you'll agree with me.

I love the V10. I would pay to money to see races with any of the V12, V10 or V8. The current V6 are pathetic. I won't be going to any more races as long as they're around.

LOL! It's been a while since I watched one of these. The V6 sounds worse than I remember. I'll seriously take my Scud over it in the noise department.

    For me:

    1. v12
    2. v10 (honestly sounds so good too, but I'll take the 12 because MOAR cylinders and KILL THE PLANET)
    3. v8
