Bored, wife at work and stuck watching a sleeping baby on the 4th. Decided to summarize my take on the character of some of the top drivers. Feel free to add or dissect.

Hamilton: Supremely aggressive with the best ability to ride the knifes edge. Locks up and drags a tire more than anyone on track. This talent extends to being able to remain one of the quickest drivers irrespective of the quality of machinery under him. When "In the zone" or allowed to "hammertime", he quite possibly unbeatable. Easily rattled on track with a history of "red mist" and dumbest stuff on wheels highlights. The ultimate prima donna off the track with questionable relationship decisions...

Vettel: The most underserving (x4)champion to some. Easily rattled on track, especially by back markers. History seems to point to being one of the best communicators to his engineers as car development is positive. Quite frankly the fastest driver...when out front... in a car he is very comfortable with. Otherwise if the car is not acceptable, usually neither are his performances. The F1 community was robbed of the most epic battle of titans in 2012 COTA by a cucumber and metal weakness, however, for a glimpse we saw two of the fastest drivers giving it their all. A man who occasionally speaks before he thinks, he is Webber's Dan Marino(Ace Ventura).

Rosberg: Oft over looked in these discussions. Has proven more than a few times capable of running with the previous two whenever he's not busy asking for direction from his team. Mentally even weaker than the previous two and holding him back.

Ricciardo: :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D Even when piloting an engine only the French could make. Only has one notable year in F1, by my goodness what a year. His race craft and passing ability led to some jaw dropping moments with "outside in" moves that made the F1 gods even smile.

Alonso: A F1 demigod to his followers, the chosen one to end Shumi's reign on F1. In reality however, he lacks out right pace of the quickest (Vet, Ham). What he does have is 95% of all of their specialties tied to by far the most mentally stable package(when on the race track). Some say he could put a car with square wheels in the points, and they would be right, as long as it isn't powered by Honda. Overall the best racer in the field but is undone by no understanding of what team means. A well practiced arsonist with a hate(or fear?) for bridges.

Button: The quintessential English gentleman. As smooth off track as he is on but lacks speed. Can anymore be said?

Kimi: A history of being extremely fast when supplied with top tier vodka and ice cream. Even willing to drive for no pay if the quality is top shelf. If the quality is poor he will forget where the gas and brake pedals are leading to a sudden almost unexplainable loss of speed. Only cares about vodka and ice cream.

Massa: Spy vs Spy in real life vs Hamilton for years. Nobody knows if he is actually quite fast or if he is just the worst driver ever.

But despite the stress and strain of injury and injured pride, there has been no sign of a fissure in the Alonso-McLaren relationship which ruptured so spectacularly seven years ago when the Spaniard’s previous stint with the Woking outfit ended in bitter acrimony, a £100m fine from the sport’s governing body for McLaren's role in the 'Spygate' affrair, and an instant divorce.

"That’s ancient history now,” countered Dennis. "We’ve all moved on - and by ‘we’ I mean McLaren, Ferrari and indeed the FIA. And the Fernando we’re working with today, now, is a fantastically motivated and inspirational man. He’s as quick as ever, as competitive as ever, more experienced than ever, more expert than ever, and he combines those traits with an infectious energy and enthusiasm.

Alonso's role was minimal in the whole Stepneygate, as I recall.
Alonso wasn't the whistle-blower in the affair, far from it.At a later stage, he just protected himself by revealing voluntarily that he had exchanged email with test driver de la Rosa about the infos leaked from Ferrari. A thorough FIA investigation would have shown that anyway.

The disagreement with Ron Dennis came from his treatment at McLaren; coming with 2 titles under his belt, he didn't expect to be challenged by his rookie team mate supported by Dennis. It was Ron Dennis playing with fire by setting his two drivers against each other that irritated Alonso mostly. I think a WDC was lost that year.

The return of Alonso at McLaren has to been seen as "a marriage of reason", and not as a love affair. Alonso had nowhere to turn after burning his bridges with Ferrari, and McLaren needed a top driver to please its new partner Honda.

Agree with most things you say. Not sure about alonso being only 9% of vettel and ham though. I think he's better than vettel

    MINIMAL?

Alonso threatened to "spill all the beans" to the FIA if he didn't get number one status over Hamilton. He never pulled the trigger but he sung like a canary to save his own skin over his knowledge that they were using Ferrari stolen info and not coming forward.

I'm not sure that's what I would call "minimal".

Look, I like Fred... but he pulled a lot of shannigans when he was at Mac the first time.

We have a different opinion about that story.

The whole affair started when the employee alerted Ferrari that their documents were photocopied somewhere in England. Alonso had nothing to do with it.

Said Alonso is the best racer. Clearly he does not have the single lap pace of vet and ham though

That makes perfect sense. We will bring in one of the best/most expensive 2x champ and his big sponsors then we will embarrass him with our rookie.

I tend to agree Fred thinks of himself first and foremost a ruthless individual on and off track..and Flavio and NPJ would know..

Anyway the biggest rat behind all these scams IMO was Mosely..

Ps: Matiacci i will never forget you for sacking that clown, thanks!!!

It wasn't that stark lol. I think Hamilton was up to speed quicker than McLaren anticipated, however Dennis had reportedly told Alonso he would be the team's #1 driver. When Hamilton was forced to stand down from his challenge to Alonso for the win at Monaco, the siht hit the fan. The tension only built up from there and McLaren flamed out in spectacular fashion.

At the center of the issue though, a) Alonso was reportedly told he would be the team's #1 driver and b) Hamilton was Ron Dennis' protégée from his years in karting up to his debut with McLaren in F1. That was a pretty bad predicament he created for himself.

Dennis favoured Hamilton as his favourite pet.
But Hamilton wasn't very grateful and dumped McLaren to new pasture.

Exactly. Nobody could have predicted that the rookie would be up to speed that quickly. Alonso fans make it sound like a well planned sabotage. Can you imagine if it didn't blow up with spygate? Rookie wins F1 championship next to best driver in the world.
Did you guys expect Alonso to sit still and watch that happen?

    Are you serious?
He gave 6 years to McLaren. He threw away some of his best years at McLaren. Did you expect him to retire at McLaren? If that isn't grateful in your book then it's a good thing he wasn't grateful. He would be the 1x champ that never did anything like Button/Kimi. Now he has a chance to become one of the greatest of all time.
Kimi is another great driver that might have 2-3 titles if he left that POS in time.

You seem to forget that without Ron Dennis, Hamilton wouldn't be were he is now.
It's Ron Dennis who discovered him, backed him up during his karting years, financed his rise in the lower categories, and gave him a chance to drop in a top team for his introduction to F1, without having to struggle for years in a no-hope team.
You seem to forget the enormous chance Ron Dennis gave Hamilton, compared to other beginers who never get a break.
Hamilton had one WDC at McLaren, many podiums. He made loads of money and became an household name, thanks to Ron Dennis.
Yes, I think that Hamilton should be very grateful towards Ron Dennis, who probably regrets now to have been so generous.

Kimi, by the way, never benefited from the coaching Hamilton received during his early years. Kimi arrived in F1 with just 23 races in all cetegories under his belt: not years of schooling paid by Ron Dennis.
