    Renault is poised to return as a works team to Formula 1, with a deal to take a majority stake in Lotus due to be finalised next week, AUTOSPORT understands.
    The agreement would end months of protracted negotiations and bring a factory Renault operation back onto the F1 grid for the first time since 2010.
    AUTOSPORT sources have indicated the French car manufacturer would take a stake up to 65 per cent, worth a total of £65million, with an initial downpayment of £7.5million to be followed by equal instalments over the following 10 years.
    Gerard Lopez, currently Lotus F1 team co-owner via his Genii organisation, looks set to remain as a shareholder with a potential stake of around 25 per cent, with four-time champion and Renault ambassador Alain Prost acquiring the remaining 10 per cent.
    The arrangement with Lopez and Prost would be very similar to that at Mercedes where motorsport boss Toto Wolff and non-executive chairman Niki Lauda possess shareholdings in the F1 team.
    Following a Renault presentation meeting currently scheduled for Monday, an array of documents is then due to be signed involving parties from both sides over the following days.
    At this stage in proceedings Renault is understood to have negotiated a full sponsorship package, with the board - spearheaded by CEO Carlos Ghosn - signing off on a budget that would put it on a par with the likes of Mercedes and Red Bull.
    One of the few areas to be determined surrounds the driver line-up for while Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado have contracts with Lotus for next year, Renault coming on board alters the landscape.
    Renault is expected to keep Frenchman Grosjean, with Maldonado believed to be negotiating - supported by backer PDVSA - to ensure he retains his seat.
    The up-to-date facilities at Lotus's Enstone factory - well known to Renault from its previous ownership of the team - are crucial to the deal.
    Lotus's CFD programme and driver-in-the-loop simulator are only two years old, while the 60 per cent windtunnel is three years old.
    Although Renault, through Prost, has also held tentative talks with Force India about a potential shareholding, the Silverstone-based marque's relative lack of facilities is a drawback.
    Renault has no real wish to acquire a team without the infrastructure behind it, though Force India remains an option should the Lotus shareholders pull out of the deal at the last minute.
    Of particular interest is Renault's current engine deal with Red Bull and Toro Rosso, with sources suggesting there are three options on the table.
    The first is Renault honouring its other contracts for 2016 alongside its own team.
    Though this would maintain an additional income stream, Red Bull's contract specifically states that it takes priority.
    Another possibility is for Renault - which has road car affiliations with Mercedes - to keep Lotus's current Mercedes power for a year while seeing out its other contracts.
    Finally, Renault could focus entirely on its own programme, but as a way of softening the blow to Red Bull, assist it in finding a new supplier, where the links with Mercedes could again pay dividends.
    The planned payment structure would amount to a bold statement of long-term F1 commitment from Renault, guaranteeing a minimum 10-year presence.
    While tentative steps would be taken in 2016, as Renault again tries to find its feet in F1 as a full-time works outfit, it would consider '17 as its first year to try to push the likes of Mercedes and Ferrari for honours.

    I always find it interesting how individuals in F1 own stakes in "competing" teams. Makes the formula really appear to be more of an entertainment industry rather than a true competitive sport. Toto Wolff, for instance, is a minority owner in at least 2 different teams that I know of... with him at the same time being the principal of Merc, seems like a conflict of interest if it truly was a full-on competition.

    great news. F1 needs another commited strong engine supplier. It is already concerning enough to have only Renault, Merc and Ferrari.

    Analysis: The tangled web behind Red Bull's bid for Mercedes engines - Formula 1 News

    Formula 1's 2015 title fight may be a straightforward Mercedes lock-out, but the same cannot be said for the fascinating off-track battle Red Bull is waging to secure the German car manufacturers' engines longer term.
    For the energy drinks giant finds itself in an amazingly complex web that involves Mercedes, Red Bull, Renault, Lotus and Ferrari – as everyone battles to maintain their own competitive interests.
    And although each party knows exactly the outcome they want from the current situation, there are conflicting motivations which mean there is not going to be a clear cut way forward.
    Red Bull Renault break down
    The starting point for understanding the current situation is that Red Bull has lost patience with Renault over its lack of competitiveness this season.
    It has been obvious for some time now that Red Bull and Renault's relationship had hit trouble: as reliability niggles and a lack of performance progress erupted in to a pretty open war of words at the start of this campaign.
    While matters may have calmed down a bit in public, behind the scenes things have been moving on as Red Bull looks to get itself back to the front.
    Despite an engine contract for 2016, it emerged in Belgium that Red Bull has notified Renault (quite some time ago according to one source) that it wants the deal terminated.
    The implication is that as a customer Red Bull has not been given the service (read 'performance promises') that it was promised.
    That is not an opinion shared by Renault, with sources suggesting that the French car manufacturer is adamant that the 2016 contract is rock solid.
    If that is the case, then the only way forward will be taking it to court – or an expensive pay-off.
    To further complicate matters, many of Red Bull's big sponsors, like Infiniti and Total, for example, are very closely affiliated with Renault.
    It is not a simple case of being able to cutting the French car manufacturer loose and automatically expecting its allies to join you.
    A 2016 truce
    Despite the breakdown in relations and desire by Red Bull to go elsewhere, it is not impossible that team and engine partner remain bedfellows for another year, and not just because the courts tell them so.
    Red Bull is waiting for Renault to finalise its Formula 1 plans for 2017, which could be the takeover of Lotus or the buy-in of another team like Force India.
    Once its plans for the long term are sorted, it will be much clearer what the landscape is like for 2016 and whether or not Red Bull can still be treated as Renault's number one partner.
    Red Bull is also eager to see whether or not a renewed commitment to F1 will deliver it with more resources to be successful. It's something Red Bull boss Christian Horner is eager to see
    "You have to do a root and branch review," he said about where he wanted Renault to go. "There are some very capable people at Renault, but it feels under resourced. You can see the effort and commitment that is going in from Mercedes and the commitment coming from Ferrari as well.
    "There is an enormous amount of resources being committed. Obviously for Renault it is as big an issue as it is for us: they cannot afford to have the negative publicity from an uncompetitive engine."
    Red Bull is also desperate to see just how much more performance the upgraded Renault engine coming for Sochi delivers: for that will give a proper indication of just what kind of progress the French car manufacturer can make this winter.
    Mercedes on hold
    Should Red Bull not be won over by Renault's plans, and it decides to push on with its Mercedes target, there are still endless hurdles to overcome.
    To further muddy the waters, Red Bull knows it will only be able to begin proper Mercedes dialogue once it is free of its current deal with Renault.
    For although Mercedes chiefs have softened their stance about a tie-up with Red Bull – having been adamant less than two months ago it would never happen – there are still contracts to respect.
    And since Mercedes is a 3.1 per cent shareholder in Renault, and likewise Renault a 3.1 per cent shareholder in Mercedes, there is absolutely no chance of them stepping on each others' toes.
    When asked by Motorsport.com about the situation, motorsport boss Toto Wolff said: "We will not interfere into an existing relationship for many reasons.
    "Legally we don't do this and it is not the way we approach business in general.
    "You must not forget Renault and Daimler go back a long way with many co-operations. It is an industrial partnership and until the situation is resolved between the two parties [Red Bull and Renault] we will not even start any discussions.
    "Because it has not reached that point, and because the complexity is quite large with the many decisions that need to be made, that is still where we are."
    Risk factors
    There is pressure being put on Mercedes though – not only from Red Bull, but also Bernie Ecclestone, who knows that F1 would benefit from having someone challenging the Silver Arrows every weekend.
    And while some Mercedes board members may be quite excited about the potential marketing boom of linking their company with the 'youth' Red Bull marketing platform, it is understood factions with the German car manufacturer's F1 team are not wholly convinced yet of the benefits.
    As well as the potential danger of handing potentially their most competitive rival the best engine, what risk is there of Mercedes being on the receiving end of the kind of negative publicity Renault faced?
    Would Red Bull throw it out there that it was getting second-rate treatment if it found itself unable to beat the Mercedes works team?
    Deal collapse
    If Mercedes decides in the end that a tie-up with Red Bull does not make sense, then the team's grand plan will be left in disarray because it could then be too late to go back with a begging bowl to Renault.
    It would have to accept an offer from Ferrari – which sources suggest will be for the identical spec power-unit as the works team – or try to put together a Honda deal. At the moment, the latter does not seem too exciting a prospect.
    Walking away
    For Red Bull, the danger of cutting Renault loose with no back-up plan is evident, because it could leave it without anything.
    And if that is the case, then there would be only one option.
    "I think the bigger danger is if we don't manage to address our current situation, the damage will be significant," said Horner.
    "We heard Dietrich Mateschitz's comments earlier in the year and it is important not to take them too lightly. We have to address the competitiveness of the team, moving forward.
    "Our priority is the competitiveness of the team moving forward. Our priority is the second half of this year, we want to hear what Renault's commitment and plans are for the future, what that entails, whether that is as an engine supplier or as a team owners.
    "They have to have a competitive engine, unless they decide to stop, and once we understand that then they have to make a plan."
    For Red Bull, the fight for Mercedes engines is not just about winning in F1: it's about its very own future in the sport.

    The Lotus Formula 1 team's current financial crisis stems from it being unable to invoice key sponsor PDVSA due to ongoing negotiations with Renault, AUTOSPORT has learned.

    Lotus's board is this week due to accept an offer from Renault of £65million for a 65 per cent stake in the Enstone-based organisation following a highly-successful presentation meeting between the parties held on Monday.

    The takeover will end the uncertainty surrounding the debt-ridden team, which was last under Renault ownership in 2010, and guarantee the futures of the 400 staff.

    The last few months have been particularly troubling as the team has effectively been in a state of financial lockdown due to a period of due diligence on the deal.

    Following the Belgian Grand Prix Lotus's trackside director of operations Alan Permane remarked: "This is the worst season we've had financially, no doubt.

    "We've had to scrimp and scrape for parts, and to get the parts on the track is a massive effort each week."

    It was at Spa the team's cars and equipment were impounded post-race by local court-appointed bailiffs due to a dispute with former reserve Charles Pic.

    The team has also faced winding-up petitions in the High Court of late following claims by a number of creditors.

    Lotus is currently sitting on a $50million (£32.5m) invoice to PDVSA, Venezuela's state-owned oil and gas giant, for the services of Pastor Maldonado.

    PDVSA pays the money in advance in late July/early August ahead of Maldonado's drive the following year.

    But despite the fact the 30-year-old has a contract for 2016, the Renault takeover means his future is uncertain at this stage, and so the invoice has been put on hold.

    Without the money from PDVSA for Maldonado, Lotus has been unable to pay its bills or invest in the development of the car, which still scored a superb third at Spa with Romain Grosjean at the wheel.

    Renault is evaluating its driver options and is first looking to speak to PDVSA and Total, Grosjean's primary backer, before committing to either man.

    It is believed Grosjean will ultimately be retained, while it is likely Renault will honour Maldonado's deal for 2016, with an option for '17.

    Renault has aided Lotus's cause in part by opting not to take money owed to it by the team following the termination last year of the engine supply deal.

    As per the penalty clauses, Lotus has been paying a set sum of money to Renault per month, a figure deducted from the monthly income received from Formula One Management's prize fund based on the previous year's championship standings.

    With Renault appreciating the fact its stance on Maldonado has placed Lotus in an awkward financial position until the completion of the takeover, the penalty payments have been suspended.

    Lotus has also confirmed that its trucks have departed for this weekend's Italian Grand Prix as scheduled.

    It's not the original Chapman Lotus outfit but the ex-Toleman, ex-Benetton team from Enstone, therefore keeping the name is meaningless.

    It's just rebadging a car to attract interest.

    I would assume they'll rename the whole mess to Renault, surely?

    Bernie doesn't much like name changes, and I'm pretty sure he can withhold prize money due, but whether he will or not is another question.

    Renault needs to go ahead and buy Lotus Road Cars and the F-1 team... its about the only historic link Lotus has other than Ford...

    Lotus also has a current contract with Mercedes for engines. I do not know how long the contract extends. It is possible that Renault-Lotus F1 powered by Mercedes will exist for 2016. Then, switch to Renault power in 2017, with GRO and Alonso.

    Renault is reviving the Alpine brand. at the moment

    Buying Lotus Cars would be a distraction to that.
