Is it possible to lay asphalt down on the old forest section? I liked to old til 2001 configuration better where cars reached 350 kph in qualifying in the forest section. Although with the V6s it will sound less fun.

It is possible, though depends on the greenies I guess.

I loved it too, one of the reasons for the change was that it was **** for spectators because they couldn't see if a change happened until a lap later.

Uhm. It's like that most tracks!...

    Those pics are old.

I went looking for newer pics and found these which were taken a few days ago. Seems like some parts of the back straight are still there.

The 2nd pic the old track is to the left of those new tracks

    3rd pic is 1st chicane.

Yeah, too bad it wasn't saved if only for historic races like other tracks.

Very shortsighted to not maintain the historical configuration when building the new section.

Ted interviewed Alex Wurz after qualifying and he mentioned that there was also noise issues with the neighbours and being unable to get the right permits with the government to continue the long track.

    What noise?

I remember when I was a kid we drove past Hockenheim on race Sunday. Mind you, we just drove past, and you could hear the engines screaming all over the motorway. Incredible.

I could well imagine that they had to strike a deal, that they continue to get government support if they show commitment to noise reduction and having the old track turned back into nature.

Haha... horesh*t to what I just said.

Here is a snapshot from google earth. All they reduced the noise for is the deer and boars in the woods.

You can sort of still make out where the ooooooold track extended west of the A6.

What a mighty track it once was.

Watching qualifying yesterday, reminded me of all the great races there, in particular
Gerhard Berger's win for Ferrari which signaled the start of the Scuderia's return.

What really happened there though? After all those years, the figured out that the noise
as affecting the local wildlife? Usually in situations such as this, the sheer size of the track
makes it prohibitively expensive to maintain. Then, of course, there are the bean counter
insurance men who can't let a good thing go unpunished.

Whatever the reason, they have surely reduced a once great track to a Mickey Mouse
layout that looks more like a go-kart track now than a proper F-1 racing venue.

I am just grateful I went to the Hockenheim GP when we still had the Ostkurve.

To answer the question: economically not viable

In the days of the old track, there were large gates at the path that crossed the old track. You can see the path on malauf's screenshot. During the week the gates were often open. When I biked through that area, it was always fun to go on the Ostkurve by bike. I am still wondering while there was never an accident with deers or wild boars during a race.

    PS
There was no race today. They faked everything on computer.
We live 10km north east to the ring and we heard absolutely nothing.
The years before we got the pictures of the race on TV and the sound through the open terrace doors.

At least you can still see where the old track was. In some cases, like Kyalami, the old track locations were completely removed and covered with new construction, and cannot even be seen in satellite photos.

I thought I read somewhere that there is talk of restoring at least one old section of what is now called the Red Bull Ring in Austria. I think the problem is that the lap times are getting too short.

One of my favorite tracks that only lives on in racing games. Along with Spa and Monza, I loved watching those long, scenic, high-speed circuits. (I used to love the A1 ring also)

Shame. I didn't realize that had totally removed the old one. :(

Used to love hearing the V-12s and V-10s scream down the wooded straights....

Yes Jim, they are indeed planning to restaure the "long old loop" (the very fast curve) that was cut short and abandoned when they transformed the old Osterreichring into the A1 ring at the end of the nineties, but Mateschitz has said that it would need a lot of money and that at best, nothing could be expected before 2020.
