So to continue the Hamilton thread, who was the better driver? Hakkinen in 1998 to 2000 or Hamilton? Hakkinen had a fairly scrappy season in 1999, but his 1998 and 2000 season were better or the same as Hamilton's 2008 and 2014 to 2016 season.

Mika had to beat Schumi. Lewham had to beat...Massa and Rosberg.

    These comparisons are pointless.

    Different eras, different formulae ...

I would think that by now everyone would know the answer to that....Mika was 10 times the driver Elton will ever be.

Hamilton is better, more consistent. Close between the two though.

How can one say how good Hamilton is as long as the car is so dominating?
When Hakkinen drove the car never did guaratee a 1-2 finish, just ask Coulthard...

Mika was faster, more confident, less arrogant than Elton. More respectful, more respected, a racer that could race very hard, but very fairly. Schumi respected Mika, and was genuinely concerned about Mika when he was in a fast car, that tells us all we need to know really.

Elton isn't respectful, certainly isn't respected, is quick but not controlled, arrogant, immoral, races with a chip on his shoulder, and above all, has achieved his titles through the car being fastest only, not as a result of any overt skill above any of his competitors.

They were/are both top class racing drivers, hard to pick the best between them.

I am not personally interested in their lifestyles/WAG's/haircuts/clothes etc etc.

I am only interested in watching the way they race.

Why Elton? I believe it a reference to Elton John....dunno why though when you see the chicks he hangs out with!

I'm sure I've heard Schumacher say a few times that Hakkinen is the best guy he's ever raced against. Tremendous respect between the two as well.

    Bas,

Didn't Schumy also have a high opinion of JV during his Williams and early BAR days or am I mixing him up with someone else??

    Never heard that one before.

I certainly have a very low opinion of JV...

I seem to remember they had a love in a few years ago, when Alonso was hoping to usurp Elton from Mercedes....... Doubt he meant it the way you think

Nah, I can't remember schumi thinking much of JV, schumi had very few he 'rated' as a challenge, the majority were nothing of the sort

You mean Schumacher failed to beat an aging piquet and couldn't beat rosberg. Whereas Hamilton beat alonso button and rosberg...

Testing the MP4-21 at Barcelona in 2006

    Hamilton lapped 1.17.077
    Hakkinen 1.19.340

2.3 seconds off the pace on a short circuit. Hamilton could lap faster than 119.3 in a back marker...

Hamilton is way better than Hakkinen. All objective evidence points that way. Next.

You still haven't learn anything, do you? My, what utter rubbish post:
    - please remind us how long has Mika Hakkinen been retired when he took the wheel in Barcelona in 2006?
    - Hamilton did not beat Button: when they were teammates at McLaren, Jenson scored actually more points than Hamilton
    - etc, etc...

Oh well...beside being better than Hamilton and the only rival to one of the greatest and fastest driver of all times, there is also something that Mika Hakkinen had in spades and that Hamilton cruelly lacks: it is class, true and pure. Hakkinen was a class act by himself, a true gentleman, a real racer and Hamilton will never be able to even compete with him on that point.
