"Good tires" Vettel mused while carefully lighting a cigarette "but certainly not great tires."

Looks like he identified where the limits are. :)

    All the best,

Not a particularly great start to 2017.

Bernie liked the idea of artificial wet tracks to liven things up a bit, maybe he had something there?

Great to see that Ferrari have everything nicely under control to start 2017....

Wouldn't be surprised if they actually decided to not risk Seb getting any further injury with only a few weeks to go. They need him 100% fit of course!

So how was this crash Ferrari's fault?

So what if it's raining in first practice in Melbourne? - Are Ferrari going to stop Vettel from running to keep him 100% for the rest of the season?

What about if 2nd practice is wet too? - Still not going to risk him?

How about a wet third practice?

Where's the difference in Vettel driving on a wet track pre-season testing, and driving on a wet track for a practice session when there are no points to be won?

Vettel crashed solo while at RB many many times on Friday practice. He seems to have no problem pushing the limits hard when there are no risks to his race result.

But he almost never crashes (without help) in quali or races.

Crashing is not a normal part of practice. You can find the limit in the wet without crashing. Do you crash sometimes? Sure, but it should not be considered ok or normal. I'm sure Vettel is not pleased with himself.

They did not have more parts to run the next day. Not good.

If you don't come walking back to the pits every once in a while holding a steering wheel in your hands, you're not trying hard enough.

No tyre problem in Vettel crash

Paul Hembery has denied an early flaw with Pirelli's 2017 tyres may already have been uncovered.

In 2013, F1's official supplier came under a bright spotlight when several tyres 'exploded' during the British grand prix.

Pirelli's Mario Isola said this week: "The incident at Silverstone was a single episode, the cause was identified and we fixed the problem in seven days."

But now, Pirelli has developed tyres that will have to go through corners up to 40kph faster, to accompany the radical aerodynamic rule changes for 2017.

Last week at Ferrari's own Fiorano circuit, Sebastian Vettel was testing the 2017 rain tyres when he slid into a barrier at speed.

Pirelli F1 chief Paul Hembery told the German broadcaster RTL: "It was very cold on that day -- it was extremely abnormal conditions that made testing very difficult and delicate.

"It was only 4 degrees, which is unusual," he added.

Asked if the tyre had suffered a problem, Hembery answered: "Again, to get the tyres to work in those temperatures is the problem."
