The report goes on to say that "no other manufacture" and then list Coca-Cola somewhere in the top 5.

Exactly what do they think Coca-Cola does for revenue?

Actually, I interpret that comment a little differently. Ferrari *makes* or *builds* a PRODUCT, whereas the others are either services or largely marketing organizations that aren't big into MANUFACTURING:

    Google: clearly a service

    PWC: clearly a service

Hermes: obviously sells PRODUCTS, but not sure what their supply chain looks like -- do they manufacture the clothes/bags themselves, or do they outsource a lot of that? If outsourced, it's largely a marketing and retailing organization.

Coca-Cola: the old Coke had minimal manufacturing, just mixing the syrup and getting bottlers to do the "manufacturing" and distribution -- in many ways KO is simply a marketing organization. However, with the trend away from CSD's (carbonated soft drinks) and the repurchase of CCE (Coca-Cola Enterprises, one of the bottlers), KO has been getting more involved in traditional bottling/manufacturing, so this point is debatable. But it is still largely a marketing organization -- just compare the worldwide advertising spend between KO and Ferrari. I think that is what the author is trying to say.

I'd have guessed Coke would be #1, but Ferrari is certainly up there.

I think the difference is in brand recognition and desirability vs actual sales.

Few "have a passion" to have a coke or use to google. Many have a passion for Ferrari whether they have one or not.

Other luxury brands such also are high on this list. For example, Rolex has a very high brand recognition, a lot of people would want one, but sales are small because they are so expensive.

If you go to the Congo or Viet nam, chances are a person there knows what a Ferrari is and would want one.

Luxury brands are the most valuable brands on earth.

Interbrand Reveals Top 100 Global Brands in 2012 | Branding Magazine

We have at least 3 different rankings. Taking your " brand recognition" I personally don't think Ferrari has more "brand recognition" than Apple or the others Forbes and Interbrands ranked.

Ferrari is a great Luxury brand but I still think Apple has more of your "brand recognition".

Not sure about that.....Ferrari has been at it for like 50 years and that logo and brand is or should be recognizable to pretty much everyone. Coca-Cola also.....

As powerful and as recognizable as Google and Apple can be, they've only been in the game for a few years and their success and expansion is very recent so they may not be at the level of Ferrari just yet.

In the US, yes. But you would be surprized at the reaction if Apple to my international distributors. Apple isn't as big out of the US. Asia is a problem in particular.

Mmmm, ask a 5 years old kid or my venerable mom if they know what an iPhone is. They won´t know. But they know what a Ferrari is.

Lady Gaga, nobody will remember her in a few years.

Coca-Cola, yes, probably the best known brand in the world.

Apple, as you said? No way. Compared to Ferrari? Nooooooo way.

I would bet that is not true. We are all car nuts. You'd be surprised at the lack of auto knowledge of the average Joe and Jane.

My GF likes my Maserati. Whenever we drive she says " look another Maserati!"

    I say: "no dear, that's a Porsche"

Her response: "well, does Porsche make Maserati?"

I would disagree. In poorer countries, I highly doubt Ferrari would be mentioned in the same breath as Mercedes. Ironically, in the same countries I have seen the yellow Ferrari shields stickers on hundreds of cars - tenfold any Mercedes stickers...

The ferrari logo actually spells out the word and cannot be confused with anything else. The Mercedes logo is nothing more than a circled star and may not click immediately in people's minds.

Advertising studies also show that the use of black and yellow colors will captivate people's attention more than any other color combo which helps Ferrari.

I don't even see them as being in the same league....

I have always wondered about these lists, but this is the first one where I remotely agree. I always see Exxon and other weird companies like GE at the very top of these lists, infront of Ferrari and other more recognizable brands.. which is total BS. If you made a US list, then it's probably true that Citibank and General Motors is above Ferrari, but that's certainly not remotely true outside the US. So I never really understood why and how they made those lists at Forbes. And who they were for, and aimed at?

Well, just for the sake of it: Hermes is still a company, and brand, owned by the same family since their beginning, albeit now through a holding that brings together all the members of the founder's family, which are more numerous with each generation.

They manufacture most of all leather clothes and bags themselves (I seem to recall that only shoes are more or less outsourced, and perfumes) and most clothes and bags are still sewn by hand. This explain that for some women bags, the waiting delay can be up to six months. Anything you want can be manufactured on your specs, provided you have the finance to back up your order of course...and are ready to wait.
You can, by appointment, visit their workshops were all leather hides are waiting, and I can assure you these are most impressive.
They are still headquartered at the exact same adress than they were in the past.

I have zero interest personnally in the company, and I am not doing their promotion in any way. What is interesting is that the company characteristics explain that it is very often seen here as THE last true luxury brand; this as most other brands do not control their manufacturing processes anymore today, and have grown so big that what they sell is no longer "luxury goods" in the true sense of the term, where you put premium on rarity and don't talk about the price: if it is not rare, then it is not luxury goods.
Hermes has managed to keep most of the production chain under strict control, and it is still, as much as the modern world allows, a family luxury brand.

Due to the uniqueness of the company, Hermes has been, and still is, subject to avid interest from the bigger luxury holdings, and have been the target of frequent markets raids, all unfriendly, from one holding or the other, trying to take control of the company which is considered as THE jewel among the luxury brands.

    Rgds

worldwide, Apple is not even in the same league as Ferrari in terms of recognition.....no mather where you go, in wich continent, averyone knows Ferrari, i do believe it´s the most known brand in the world...alongside Coca cola......i can assure you guys, lot´s of the construction people i work with have never hear the name "apple"...but, although most of them are die-hard soccer fans, they all know Ferrari.
