What would you vote for?

  1. Keep your 1997 F355 Spider. (one of the prettiest modern Ferraris)

  2. The F430 spider is the way to go.

  3. The 458 Italia Spider is way better than either, go for it!

As the question implies I am looking at F430 spiders vs 458 Italia Spiders. Obviously the latest technology to that point and 100 more hp are big factors. But are they worth the extra $100,000?

Give me some first hand experiences from 430 to 458 spider owners.

    Thanks

I have a 430 MT spider and an Italia.

It is tough to beat the 458 in any capacity. It is a magnificent machine all the way around.

I would not trade my 430 for it though. Plus it's not worth 100K more to me and that's the original question. i

If money is no object and you are simply asking if its worth it, then yes!

Depending on the year, you may even get 7 years of no cost annual services! The F430 does not have that.

... will you have a blast in any of the above... Yes , without question.

They are all totally different cars and different experiences from each other.

Drive them , buy the one that fits your budget!

    Enjoy!

Every generation gains more ability and refinement. It really depends on what you prize in the experience. Objectively, the 458 is a better built car with better technology.

Yes. I must say i was never a fan of the 430 so it's easy for me to say the 458 is worth it.
The 458 not only looks better, it sounds much much better (the 430 always had a very fake sounding noise IMO). The interior is way above the 430's, not just in terms of quality but in design.

Buddy, I think it all depends on your budget. I'd rather have 2 Ferrari's than one that costs the same.

So I would try to keep the 355 and add a 430.

If you can only have one car then I would vote 458.

Most would pick the 430 because of reduced maint. Sound not as good as the other two.

458 May get expensive to maintain in future because of dsg gearbox.

I still think 355 is prettiest of all 3.

I love all three, but it's no contest driving wise - 458 every time, a future classic

Robb, The big services on a 355 are way more than a dct fix. In the beginning, the units could only be replaced and that costs big $. The fixing process has been simplified and now a fix is possible without replacing and the costs will be less than half of what is used to be. Pairing that with the carbon brakes which won't need rotor replacement unless tracked, it'll make the maintenance the cheapest of all 3. No clutch replacement needed either which can get expensive on a 430. Overall I'd say the 458 is the cheapest to maintain.

Are you selling the 355 to get the next one?

I am sometimes tempted (my mechanic keeps putting a bug in my ear to upgrade to at least a 430), but as of now I'm still in love with my 355. The sound, the engagement of the manual, the little go-kart feel. Universally, people love it.

That said, I have been putting about 800 miles a month on it and some days the conveniences of a newer car might be nice, especially a top that goes up and down without a circus act, nose lift, better A/C and a stereo that doesn't sound like a cell phone turned up all the way. I've driven both paddle and stick 430s and 458 and could probably parlay up to a paddle 430 but I'm honestly afraid that if I sold the 355 I might regret it.

As ttforcefed said, 'money no object' I'd keep the 355 and add a 458 or 488 spider (or a V12 coupe). A manual 355 and a paddle 599, 612 or FF would be the best of both ends of the spectrum.

Yeah unfortunately I would have to sell the 355. It is a great car but the lure of a Ferrari with an additional 200hp is hard to resist. Plus as you mentioned the new tech and comfort features.

    - Last of the great Normally Aspirated Ferrari V8s?
    - Last of the great Pininfarina V8 Designs (??) and beautiful for a modern car.
    - Love the look & sound of the 355, but high maintenance and performance is no match for the other cars.

The F430 can sound pretty amazing with an aftermarket exhaust. The 458 and 488 are enormous steps forward on paper, but financially the step seems even bigger. I am guessing the amount of depreciation you will experience with the newer cars would be much greater also. I had the chance to drive all three at that Exotics racing place in Vegas. The newer 458 and 488 felt each like big steps forward. However, same driver, same track, same day, I was only 1.8 seconds faster in the 488. I know Ferrari buying is not a math-based decision, but those couple seconds seemed extremely expensive, to me at least, when the F430 is such a great car.

    Just my 2 secs.

    458. Hands down. That's what my next will be though I'm keeping my 3pedal.

What makes people think the F1 430 isn't finished depreciating? (it's not IMHO)
I predict they're $80-90k cars in time. 458 will depreciate as well but hey, will it be in lockstep with the 430? Good question.

    Owning a 355 and a 458 I'd say keep 'em both.

458 is worth every single cent of those 100.000 USD you mention.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

No offense but forget the wife.
Every time I have compromised to please the wife I fell short of my goals and in the end the wife could care less over the choice. Wives are not "car guys".

If money is a real priority forget spiders.
You can get a 430 scud for less than a 458 spider.
In 10 years the Scud will be worth double.
    The 458 half.
The Scud will always command respect.
The 458 will be just another used Ferrari.

Exactly how much is an open sky worth ?

Great question . I went from a 430 spider to a 458 spider and wondered if it was worth the 135k plus my car 2 years ago . The answer is unequivocally a YES ! I'm not convinced that it's worth another 150k plus my car for a 488 spider. Best , Kirk.

Dude.. You don't know what the Scud will be worth in 10 years. That crappy F1 transmission isn't worth a dime more than the DCT. It burns through clutches when you drive it "the way it was intended" regardless of ECU. Not everybody wants that "hard racetrack" experience, my experience is esp. wives going out to dinner in a dress. It doesn't "always command respect".. it's a 430 with carbon bits. That's why for such a limited production run there are so many on cars.com. The one advantage is you can convert it to stick...

The f430s have been increasing in price over the last 2 years!

I think the original question depends on an individual's situation and disposable income.
I think the 458 spider is a prettier car than the 430 spider and with it being a hardtop it's much better. I personally don't like the ragtops and I think the 430 spider compromises on looks. I wouldn't spend an extra $100k on a 458 spider, I think the 430 sounds better too and I love the way the valves blow open.
In my dream garage, I would have a manual 355 GTS, a 430 scudaria and a 458 spider.

For the record, I drive an F1 F430 coupe but even before I bought the car, the 458 wasn't on my radar. For an extra £30-40k I could have bought one but I wasn't interested.

Is the 458 spider worth the $100,000 over the F430 spider?

    A) it is worth $70 more on looks alone
    B) then there is that engine....

Well, if your strictly in it for "investment" purposes, then what the Manual Transmission F430? Maybe that would be worth more than the Scud. It certainly is worth a lot more than the F1 version at this time and probably just as rare with no F1 issues to worry about.

Regardless, I'm in it for the performance. So, 458 easily.
