Hi. A friend of mine has a 512 engine for sale. Came out of a car being written off after an accident. The engine is in good used condition with all accessories still on. USD 20.000. PM for more details. I can arrange shipping etc. as I have sent engines before in air cargo crates etc.

I am checking into the details now. Will update the thread tomorrow. This engine is HARD TO FIND...!! It is inspected inside with camera and looks perfect.

It is indeed hard to find. It's also very expensive to repair.

I'd suggest doing some leakdown / compression numbers. Along with detailing every accessory that comes with the engine.

It all adds up if any of it is in poor working order or missing.

The cylinders have been inspected inside with a camera and everything looks great. The wrinkle paint should be refurbished before installation in a car.

Can be installed in a car or racer or even be used as an exclusive item indoors or for the real collector to bring to car shows etc.

    Hi Snake eye :)

The engine has 9.000 miles from new. We will perform a leakdown test this week.

In Italy some guy installed a Testarossa engine in a speed boat! 20.000 USD for this engine is absolute a bargain for an original engine with that power and low miles!!

Matt, can a leak down / compression test be performed with a cold engine?

I guess a test is best when the engine has been run recently as the oil on the culinder walls will give better compression. It is six years since this engine ran the last time.

Erik, I guess the engine will turn, but running it dry (shudder), even if oiled, will not give true readings.

The engine should be run with gasoline and then do the tests. Personally, after six years of sleep, it could be a tough awakening.

I am guessing, it will be a difficult project.
This is a case where I would rather buy a completely disassembled engine, than a possibly catastrophic $20K mistake.

    Good luck with the sale!

    Regards, Alberto

Last news: We have done a leak down test and two cylinders on the same side show some leak (not much). The rest have excellent leak down results. We can either fix this or sell at a discounted price. We spoke with another 512 owner and he said his 512TR also had slightly leakage on a couple of cyøinders but the car ran normal and great. This should be possible to be used as it is, but when it is out from the car, then it is not much work to fix as the owner runs a machine shop and have worked on Ferrari engines for many years.

New price as-is INCLUDING shipping to wherever you want it, cradle approved for air-cargo etc. is: 15.000 USD. Or with fixed valve/valveseats and new headgasket + two new timing belts and tensioner bearings is 17.000 USD.

THAT is a bargain!! When did you see an engine like this for sale?

    Thank you,
    Erik

It is not a bargain at all.

There was one at Ebay.de for Euro 10.000 that did not sell untill it was lowered to Euro 8.000. That is less than half of the price of this engine at K$15.

Cause/reason: there is no need for these engines as spares; they simply do not break or die ...

And IF really needed: there are plenty of these engines in reserve (Eurospares K£14).

I sold one 550 engine for 15.000 dollars to a guy who wanted to have it as a spare engine even if his engine in the car ran perfectly. People are different, which is a good thing. Some have a positive mindset, and some have a negative mindset.

I agree, but the market will dictate $.

Some of what has been said is very true. An engine that has been sitting will need some attention.
