Hi All, Just out of curiosity, what does it take to import a once US, now CA car back into the US? I've never really considered this... Is there an import tax? Federalization charges? Thanks, Franny
Best thing to do is ask a broker. There are also some threads around this site about that. Try using the search engine, I think you'll find what you need to know.
The way the market is going, I'd say that is a HECK of a nice price on a beautiful car. GL with the sale....
GLWS! With your very reasonable and realistic asking price, it won't be long. It will sell. Don't get tempted to put on consignment or trade-in as you will lose 10% of actual selling price.
Beautiful car! I so wish I could do this now... Good luck with your sale. I'm sure it will be gone shortly if it isn't already. Franny
My car is still available, for sale, had fair amount of offers, but failed so far to get right price, which is a bit puzzling considering the little amount of 328's out there for sale, the recent uplift in price and exchange rate. Add failed to mention $45000 Canadian dollars = $41000 US.
Lowballers gonna low ball. Forget them. This car is priced to sell. Get the word out. If I was a dealer I would swoop this up, service it where needed, put it on the showroom floor and slap a price tag on it that starts with the number '6'. -F
Great looking car! If the car was in the US it would be sold, as I would have bought it (provided it met all the California emission & equipment requirements). I think most people are a little worried about importing and emission's testing. I don't know what the estimated cost would be, but I'm guessing no less than $5k to get it to the US and registered. If my guess is correct, then you are competing with $46k-$55k cars in the US (the higher price simply due to the uncertainty of importing). You might try to work out a deal with an importer, so that you can advertise a given price to import and register into the US. That provides a solution and establishes a price for anyone in the US that is interested in your vehicle. Good luck with the sale.
But to be accurate, this is a US car that was imported into Canada only a few years ago. It might help to discuss where the car was previously and if it had to pass that state's emissions tests. Stock US 328 typically have no problems with emissions tests. -F
I just wanted to comment on how appropriately priced montreal328's car is at $41,000 US. I am following the market for 1986, 1987, and 1988 328s (GTS/GTB) and have created a scattergram (mileage vs price) of 125 cars advertised or sold in 2014 from every source I could find (ebay, auctions, dealers, FerrariChat, etc). I then used Excel to draw a trend line (logarithmic and exponential) to make sense of the noise. I found that for a car with 42,800 miles, one trend line crossed at $48,000 and the other at $46,500. Thus, montreal328's price point leaves a bit of room for a new owner to do a major service or address the import issue. Since one could argue that the market has changed to the upside this year, I did another analysis using only the 43 cars that sold in 2014. In that case, the trend line crossed the 42,800 miles mark at $47,000. Again, montreal328's car is sensibly priced. I would have thought that the actually sold cars would have resulted in a much higher-positioned trend line (and price) given all the hype after Hagerty raised their price estimates so much recently. My conclusion is that asking prices are now disconnecting from the real world and causing the perception of a runaway 3x8 market.
You also need to take into account if it is in need of a service and condition of paint and interior.
Thanks for the comments, it actually generated an offer with deposit from a member here, pending ppi.
