1986 Ferrari 328 GTS for Sale-Giallo/Brown I am reluctantly selling my car due to an impending retirement, trying to downsize for that occurrence. Being a gearhead growing up and always following Ferrari after growing up, I purchased this car from Motorcar Gallery, in Ft. Lauderdale, after having PPIs on 6 different cars all over the United States that did not pass muster. I have enjoyed the car, but I am a rather large guy and being 61 and 275# made it all the more fun to get in and out. I am the 5th owner. I do not have any service records from before I bought it, but the previous owner had it for 17 years. I had the car listed earlier, but did not do a very good job of marketing it. The car has 35, 9XX miles on it. It needs a belt service (I can get it done, but I thought the prospective purchaser might want it done at their local shop, rather than at mine). Some people have said that the car has had lack of maintenance, but I have maintained it just like the 4 other classic cars I own, in addition to the 4 daily drivers I own; maintenance done as needed, and not on a routine basis. I have worked as a mechanical engineer for 39 years helping maintain multi-million dollar pieces of equipment, and have been taught that some things need preventative maintenance; other things can be maintained on a condition based maintenance program with no deleterious effects to the equipment. The car was purchased by the previous owner from Steve Barney at Foreign Cars Italia, North Carolina in June of 1991 20,738 miles and owned it for 17 years before I purchased it in 2009, the previous owner had the car maintained at Algar Enterprises, one of the oldest and most well respected factory authorized dealers in the country. The last belt service the previous owner had was in 2002. Things I have personally done with car: Replaced driver and passenger seats with beautiful brown leather last year. I covered the driver and passenger seats with a highly recommended leather conditioner/preservative, and the factory dye came off of the driver seat. The seats had not been redyed, it was the factory dye that came off with the conditioner. Changed oil-I have used a boutique oil called Schaeffer oil in all my collector cars. They have been manufacturing lubricating oil since 1859. Brake system flushed, coolant replaced when the cam belt and water pump were replaced. Tachometer was not working correctly and was replaced with a new Ferrari tachometer when cam belt changed, old is tachometer is included. A/C recharged with R12 with service above. Mechanic recommended not to change system over to R134a. Car shifts smoothly, engine runs well, and it does NOT smoke on start up or while driving. Radio is aftermarket and was in car when I purchased it. Since Italian cars appear to be similar to British cars with their electrical systems, I replaced all the light bulbs in the car (except for the dash lights and headlights) with LEDs, to reduce the load on the electrical system. Grounded computers better in accordance with recommendations from Ferrarichat members. Possible areas of improvement: Suspension bushings are externally cracked on visible edges, but car drives solid and does not wander. Dash/door panel replacement-seats, dash, door panels colors do not match-it appears to me that the dye has changed color and some areas look olive rather than brown. If car is going to a warm climate, maybe upgrade A/C squirrel cage motor to what our fellow Ferrarichat member Ultimate pedals suggests to increase air flow. Factory A/C airflow is extremely low. The collector car A/C guy Retroair has a rotary compressor upgrade for Ferraris, which will probably improve cooling. I have installed this type of compressor on two collector cars (a Jaguar and a Mercury), and they seem to work better and use less horsepower. I have touched up the front end with paint from Dr. Colorchip, a stickler might like to have my work redone. I also did the same on the bottom of the doors near the weather stripping and again a stickler may have it redone (you have to lie on your back on the ground to see it). Charlie, which leather conditioner did you use that caused the problems? Would be good to know. And good luck with the sale.
Based on a lot of recommendations from my Jaguar friends, I used Gliptone Professional Leather Care Kit.
Mr. Jim, you are correct the areas around the vents on the dash are pulled back due to shrinkage of the leather around the vents.
See picture, I left Gliptone on the seat overnight and the dye came out of the seat bottom. Image Unavailable, Please Login
hi, so how many miles on it now and, do you have manuals, records, jack kit, tool kit, etc.? thanks, joe
Soon as I saw your car I had an instant craving for a banana creme pie! Interior, exterior and engine compartment look great. (Gotta love the Motovanti tube.) After all your looking and PPi's, I know thats a tough decision. Car seems fairly priced too. Best wishes!
I want to thank everyone for the interest shown for my car and all sure the kind words about it. The Ferrarichat folks are really a GREAT bunch of folks!! Charlie Jacobs
