Gary, I thought any car older than 25 years was legalized automatically??

Not in Kalifornia unfortunately... Must have the coveted BAR sticker, which is near impossible to get.

    Cheers and GLWS!

It's actually a little bit more complicated than that. If it's over 25 years old, it can be imported without doing anything. However, if a car is here illegally (because it was imported illegally before the 25 year exemption), then it's still illegal.

This car was imported legally through Amerispec, who were, IMO, the most reputable importer. I had, and provided to Gary (and the current owner), the complete file from Amerispec, including photos, checklists, and correspondence with the EPA and DOT, including releases.

So this car is 100% legal. Unfortunately, it's not California legal, but what can you do? It's lived in Oregon most of it's life (1991-2013).

CA is one step tougher than the rest of the US. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but to my understanding, California's cut-off is 1975, not a rolling 25 years like we have in NY (where currently anything 1990 or earlier is exempt). Also, I think post 1975 cars need to have come from the factory with a CA emissions sticker, or you have to go through the BAR sticker ordeal. I grew up in CA but now live in NY so I don't know why I'm still so interested in this subject, but the CA kid inside me finds it all pretty frustrating! This is a helpful thread regarding CA...
