This 1985 Ferrari 308 GTB QV was built in May 1985 and shipped to Newport Imports where it was sold to Mr. Gottlieb of Beverly Hills, CA on August 12, 1985. Mileage at the time of sale was 161 and the agreed price was $52,000 for a total of $56,055.20. The original sales invoice and all purchase docs are still in the owner’s manual pouch. A 308 Quattrovalvole “US” version brochure with a “Newport Imports” labeled is included too. Mr. Gottlieb kept the car for four years and accrued just over 10,000 in that time. He sold it in August of 1989 to a Mr. Ando of Huntington Beach, CA., a collector with a few Ferraris. It is clear that Mr. Ando didn’t drive the car very much because after two years of ownership (August 1991) a CA required a smog test was required and the odometer reading on test day was 11,018. For most his ownership, which spanned from 1989 to 2014, Mr. Ando had the car on static display. In a recent conversation with me, he told me he started the car regularly and drove it around the block from time to time, but mostly it sat among a few other cars and memorabilia. After two decades of this bizarre practice, Mr. Ando overheated the engine and blew a head gasket. The mileage at the time of breakdown, 11,153, was just 135 miles higher than it was in 1991. In August of 2014, Ando sold the car “in need of a service” to well-known Ferrari 308 enthusiast and FChat member, Ward Prickett (wards70). Mr. Prickett moved it to the restoration shop that was currently working on his Euro model 308 GTB Vetroresina and planned to fix this QV after his Vetro was finished. A year later and with restoration costs of his Vetro mounting, his patience for restorations had run thin and he sold the car to me in the same condition that he found it. I moved the car to my trusted mechanic, Chris Dugan (Dugan Enterprises, LLC) in Oceanside, CA for evaluation. It came as absolutely no surprise to Chris or me that this QV needed a little more than a service. Dugan is a very talented mechanic that I have trusted for many years and he has become a good friend. He did a full mechanical restoration of my 1977 308 GTB (#21167) and my 1978 512 BB (#24881) that I sold last summer via RM Auctions in Monterey. He has done countless cars for my business partner and friends. Once they’re done, you can count on them to perform well and reliably, but I recommend having a beer or two before opening an email from him where the subject line reads “INVOICE.”

It wasn’t easy, quick or cheap, but Dugan began a comprehensive and meticulous mechanical refurbishment of this car to return it to its original standards. The work began in November 2015 and was completed in August 2016. The cost was $25,978.90 and included rebuilds of the engine, fuel system, braking and cooling systems. The nine-page bill can be viewed in the Dropbox link at the bottom of this listing along with detailed pictures of the car and accessories. In summary, the engine was completely disassembled, cleaned and visually inspected. Thankfully, no damage was found, so the block and heads went to the machine shop for a closer inspection and measurement of the main journal bearing and bore. New main bearing caps were machined to their respective bearing saddles. The cylinder heads were resurfaced, overhauled and a complete valve job was performed on all cylinders. The crankshaft, pistons and barrels were good so reassembly began with all new bearings, thrust washers, seals, gaskets and piston rings. The front lower timing gears were replaced and the flywheel resurfaced, then the bottom end was balanced. The top end was given the same thorough treatment with resurfaced valves, new valve springs, guides and seals. New camshaft belts, tensioner bearings and accessory belts were installed along with an AC service. A new clutch and pressure plate were fitted. The fuel system was completely refurbished with the tanks being cleaned, new crossover hoses, new fuel injectors and the fuel distributor being rebuilt. The braking system was given the same attention with caliper rebuilds, new lines and pads. The original radiator was sent out and returned with freshly cleaned and tested internals. From there the sorting began and numerous hours were spent assuring proper performance and tuning. Then a stringent CA smog test was performed and a fresh certificate issued. New Goodyear tires were fitted and all lights and switches were tested. Upon completion the car was displayed at the 2016 Concorso Italiano where it was awarded silver. A surprising result in my mind because we have preserved the car, not restored all factory finishes. I don’t have the judging sheets to see deductions, but I assume that some marks on the wheels, a little patina in the interior, a disintegrated fuel filler bib and non-operating power mirrors prevented a higher award. The body is in excellent condition and has never had any accident damage or rust. The paint is excellent. At the end of the Monterey weekend I drove the car home to Newport Beach. It performed flawlessly on the 101 through the Central Coast with the engine making good power and the gearbox feeling great. In heavy traffic through Los Angeles, the engine cooling system did its job.

I bought this car as a bookend to my ’77 308 GTB with the intention of keeping it long-term and liked the idea of having one early and one late, but my financial priorities have shifted from wanting a car collection to wanting a larger house for my family. I’m in no rush and hope to find a sensible buyer who appreciates this car as much as me. Alternatively, I am co-owner of a well-know car dealership and can let the sales guy loose with this one, but since it is personal, I’d rather handle it myself. I welcome any questions, test drives and third party inspections, however, I kindly request that you have your side of things (funding, spouse, etc.) in order before making too many requests of my time. There is a huge folio of pictures in a Dropbox link above. Please let me know if you want to see anything else.

Wow! Wow! Wow! As an owner of a '85 308 QV which has won a few awards I take my hat off to you - but wonder why you didn't spring for the $20 fuel filler bib before showing her... 😄Just kidding! She is beautiful and I wish you the best of luck! In South Africa, in RHD, she would sell for ZAR 2.0 million to ZAR 2.1 million in a heartbeat (US$ 138,000 to US$145,000) but unfortunately we can no longer license LHD vehicles. Lovely car though! Well done.

GLWS. Very nice car. Similar to my (one owner) 85 "B" except mine is red/Tan.

    Price seems reasonable.

Having seen this car in person many times, the photos don't do it full justice. It's amazing and won't be around long.

Is the interior completely original or are the seats re-upholstered?

The seats have had some light dye work and still feel good to the touch. No leather was replaced and no other interior repairs were made.

I agree. The time to buy a care like this is when you see it available. Cars like this are not available often and if you wanted a US QV GTB in black well you might not see one available ever again.
