Feast your eyes on these great pieces -

-1956 Ferrari "Girard-Perregaux" watch given as a 65th birthday gift to engine designer Vittorio Jano by Lancia-Ferrari D50 driver Eugenio Castelotti. This watch is a 34mm manual winding with the Prancing Horse at 6 o'clock, a cream face and two subdials. There is some scratching to the sides of the case but it's in otherwise fine condition for it's age. The replacement strap is black crocodile and in perfect order. The rear of the case has been inscribed Per Vittorio Jano maestro di tecnica e di vita Eugenio Castelotti 22 April 1956. Vittorio (Apr.22/1891-Mar.13, 1965) is probably one of the most influential Italian automobile designers, starting early with Fiat in 1911, then moving to Alfa Romeo in 1923 where he designed the P2, 1750, P3 & Alfetta. He later joined Lancia in 1945 and his V6 & V8 engines replaced the older Lampredi and Colombo designs. Jano is most well known for designing the Lancia D50 which raced at the hands of Ascari and Castelotti in 1955, which later became the Lancia Ferrari D50 in 1956 after Lancia sold out to the Scuderia. This watch was on display at the Ferrari Factory for some time and is a real piece of Alfa Romeo/Ferrari/Lancia history.

-1951 Ferrari "Marvin" watch given to the drivers of that year's Carrera Panamericana (Ferrari 212 Inter Vignale). This watch is a 36mm manual winding with the Carrera Panamericana logo, a gold face and two subdials. It is in very good condition for it's age. The replacement strap is a brown crocodile and is near new. The rear of the case has been inscribed La Carrera Panamerica / Rally Mexico in the stylized logo as well as 1951 and 25-50 and FERRARI. It is also stamped Fond Acier Inoxydable and 65775. This watch was also on display at the Ferrari Factory for some time and is a real piece of Ferrari history

That Girard-Perregaux is amazing. Is it for sale or part of your personal collection? If it's the former, how many arms/legs/first-born sons are we talkin' here?

I think the buyer should be someone who owns a car with Eugenio Castelotti history, or should be purchased by the Alfa Museum.

Yes, please, we're all dying to know. But I'm expecting them to be stratospheric.

Thanks for your comments. To answer your questions, yes, I am selling them in my gallery. To put the prices in perspective, both sell for way less than half of a 328 as per Jedi's comment. In fact, they are both considerably under $20K, but asking over $10K. Consider that you can buy a modern Panerai or G-P watch that has nothing to do with the history of the company other than the fact that it is licensed, for this amount or much more.

Here is one other one in my collection that is also quite interesting - it is in the same price bracket:

A rare 1953 Ferrari "Marvin" watch, given as a Christmas gift by Mario Ricci to Umberto Maglioli for driving in the Carrera Panamericana in the Ricci sponsored Ferrari 375MM #0358 and #0320AM. Maglioli started in #0358 but lost a wheel, then switched to #0320 where he finished 5th overall. The next year, 1954, Maglioli won the Panamericana in the very same car, a Ferrari 375MM, only chassis #0392. The watch is completely original save the strap, which is a replacement. All of the inner workings, engraving, case and dial are circa 1950s. The watch is made by Marvin. I have handled some early 1950s Alfa Romeo watches by this company. They have been making watches since 1850 - you can read more about this Swiss company here -
    http://www.marvinwatches.com

The face has the "Marvin" logo with a star, and "Carrera Panamericana" below. What is interesting is that it shows the measurments 'kmh' and 'km' at the top outer ring, showing this watch was made for use in a car. The back has been inscribed "N.23 Per Umberto Maglioli con amicisia e gratitudine, Mario Ricci, Vergato. Dicembre, 1953" - roughly translated as 'Number 23, For Umberto Maglioli with friendship and gratitude, Mario Ricci, (city of) Vergato (Bologna, Italy) December 1953 (Christmas)'.

You can read more about the man and the car here: http://carrerapanamericana.homestead.com/english.html
    This is an interesting excerpt:

I take great pride in the knowledge that, as a result of my contribution, Ferrari won its first World Constructors Title and the glorious Ferrari Nº 23, majestically driven by an unbeatable
Maglioli, broke the world road speed record, established during the Chihuahua-Ciudad Juàrez stage which was won at an average speed of 222.59 km/h, an average speed which has never again been reached during a road race.

In case people do not know, Marvin is a well respected and collected brand. Not quite at GP's level, but no slouch.

Thanks for sharing these fine pieces.

You may all know this, but the GP in post one, and the Marvin in post nine, both have 'telephone' minute recorder subdials. Those subdials have elongated markers at the 3, 6, and 9 minute spots. This was useful in the days of pay phones, when you were charged for calls in 3 minute intervals. By starting the chronograph feature when your call went through, you could easily tell when you needed to end the call or dig up some coins to buy another 3 minute extension.

I can't tell you how many times I've told that to someone who owns a watch with that feature and didn't know it!
