I am in search of quality french cuff shirts....in NYC I used to just go to Brooks Brothers; but, their quality is a disaster today; outside of the white collar-blue shirt most of their stuff looks like very cheap....shiny thread in edges and plackets. Barneys, Saks, Bergdorf, Neiman used to carry nice house brands with classic spread colors and broadcloth. But, their stuff has gone off style...with no front plackets, pointy collars, and styles that get crushed in pressing machines of most cleaners. I used to get British makes too at the Burberry or Aquascutum store...all gone. Hilditch & Key, no longer in USA; Turnbull & Asser (collar has weird crooked edge at end or Kilgour, French & Stanbury...but almost all are very strange colors, fabrics. Robert Talbott is like a sheet. Used to Love Sulka & Dunhill. Only place I have had luck is Paul Stuart $145-195 with Sea Island white; and a Silky powder blue (not french blue) that is very old school. However, there stuff is very conservative. Not a fan of custom made, as they always seem to shrink and your out $1000+ on 5 shirts that dont fit. Im ready to pay $200 a shirt and cant find anything? Is London my only choice for a classic windsor collar, cuff shirt?
Barney's made to measure are all done by Hamilton Shirts in Houston. You can try calling them direct. If not I have had luck with the Ike Behar custom.
Pm me if you are interested have a shirt maker on 32 st. Made shirts for Bush. Colin Powell , Tom Brokaw ect.... Great quality, fast turnaround , good value.
I used to like Turnbull & Asser, but they truly have become terrible value. Three makers for you to consider. I've had good luck with all of them, although I've settled on the last. Harvie & Hudson: best value-for-money. Very well made, is somewhat conservative New & Lingwood: proper, detachable collar shirts when utmost formality is required. Emma Willis: used to be with T&A. Has a "near bespoke" online service that allows you to order one at a time. Very fine shirts. All can be ordered online, as well as offering US visiting services, if you want to go bespoke.
I ordered a few suits and shirts from Thos James. The personalized service (fitted me in my office) was great. However, the sales guy fits you rather than a tailor. That seems to have a negative influence. In addition, my shirts have not worn well. Where I keep a pen in the pocket has become all ratty looking. This is premature to many shirts, which I have had for much longer. The suits were nice fabric, but not really tailored as well as I have had in the past.
Interesting, my experience was much different. My Tome James shirts have lasted longer than any others I've had and the fir was perfect!
Hands down the best off the shelf shirts I've found are from Hawes and Curtis: http://www.hawesandcurtis.com/mens-all-mens-shirts_50.html Most importantly IMO the collar and the fabric underneath the collar on either side stays up - wash after wash - nothing that cheapens a shirt than when the sides under the collar crease up under the weight of the collar. Fabric aside, very good styles and as a smallish 38" chest, their fitted range is exceptional. Many of the more expensive "designer" brands (i.e. non shirt specialist shirt makers) I've tried at many times the cost in some cases often have crap "current trend" collars or are too soft in material so they don't sit well and/or the collar crushes the material underneath and/or they look awful after one wash. I have some Hawes and Curtis shirts I've washed 30+ times at 30 degrees and they look as new when steam ironed.
No better shirtmaker than Anto in Beverly Hills, complete custom crafted on site, amazing Italian and Swiss fabrics. They also have laundry service available which includes hand pressing. Their clientele is international. There is no finer shirtmaker.
www.ctshirts.com not custom, but decent quality at good price. Especially higher end shirts such as black label.
A/C is good. A friend recommended Jos. A. Banks. I tried a few. Not bad, not bad at all. Not being a fan of French Cuffs, a quick look to their site yielded: http://www.josbank.com/menswear/shop/SubCategory_11001_10050_1000002?langId=-1&parent_category_rn=&top_category=&pageView=¤tPage=0&pageSize=&filter1=&filter2=&filter3=french+cuffed
I wear Robert talbott and have been pretty happy with them. I haven't been happy with the people who alter my sleeves. I am looking into having them made. The thai tailor Ravi has been suggested to me. He is less than half the price of Robert talbott and made to your measurements. Im not sure about ordering tailored clothes through a website. I had an appointment with them for the 25th when they will be here but now I won't be in town. I was going to try him out on a suit and some shirts.
Agreed. This is where I source most of my office shirts from (beware, if you/your wife press the shirts yourself then the material is pretty hard work to get perfect - but if you're paying someone to do it that's not a problem).
Nothing to add other than glad to be retired. Cannot imagine a place I need to be where board trunks, flip flops, and a cotton t-shirt would not work. Comfort is key. You guys seem like Fancy lads , quote stolen from a old cult movie.
Thomas Pink is a great, preshrunk, french cuffed shirt with great fabric quailty. They're priced great as well. I have a lot them and I swear by them. They dont have as many solid colors as i would like but they DO have them. I love that they have all body shape cuts as well, so you get the shirt that fits you the best.
I really like the quality of Paul Frederick shirts and I used to have all my shirts made by Thos. James, but these are just as good at a quarter or half of the cost. Www.paulFrederick.com
